Good Day Folks,
Well it appears that Spring has Sprung in our corner of the world and everyone is opening up their places and getting ready for another summer... Of course that also means projects for many of us and deal hunting we go... BUT there are so many scams & scammers and what are the games...
The Competition Bureau (Gov of Canada) put out this booklet / guide on many of the current scams going on and some of the things you can do to avoid being a victim.
http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/03074.html
Hope it helps prevent any of our good Cabin Folks from being scammed. Good Luck and Stay Sharp !

Thanks Steve.
1. I got a call from the Warranty Dept. about my Jeep. I said whats the name of your company? She said Ford. I said so your with Ford calling about my Jeep. She said oh crap and hung up.
2. A contractor wanted to renovate the hall bathroom. He gave me an estimate of $7000 and wanted $4000 down payment. I said I only do progress payments. We can do weekly, show me the schedule with cost break outs and as you get things completed, I'll write checks, that include the profit, total cost divided by weeks. Never heard back from him. I can't tell you how many times Mike Holmes showed folks paying WAY TOO much in up front money only to be left with a disaster. If its a big job, I check their recent references also by actual visits.
3. I guy came to the house after a storm and was selling roof, fence, etc and said I could just claim it on my insurance as storm damage. He could see I had no storm damage.
One of the most powerful things you can do if you think to do it is to get a camera and start taking their picture. I had a guy scoping out my house from the road. I got my camera and took pictures of him and his truck so he could see what I was doing. Have not seen him since. Sure, could have been nothing, but bad guys do not like have their picture taken.

My name IS Steve and I do NOT post Fake News or Contrived Tripe which is of no help to good people. There is plenty of that carp out there for people to wade through and this site is generally free of such (exception the odd Spam deposit).

Cabi- stop giving that boy so much coffee and letting him loose on the computer.
How long does it take to trim all those fingernails?
I found a good way to get rid of telemarketers. If you don't answer, their automatic dialer will just call til you do. So, I answer the phone, let them give their song and dance, and when they stop I say one thing and one thing only- "Please remove my phone number from your phone list". If they ask a different question I say the same thing. This works. I used to get lots of calls, now I get almost none.

FWIW I'd like to share a feature called NoMoRobo available online. Register your phone number with it and it will distinguish any auto-dialed incoming call and reject it after one ring. Been using it for at least 3 years now and it does work.
It's free for landlines, 4.99/mo for mobile numbers.
Recommended.

We had someone call to sell us a cell service (we don't have cell coverage out here). Bob stayed on the line with the guy for about an hour (he had too much free time on his hands that day) getting very excited and asking lots of questions. Finally when the guy wanted to seal the deal Bob asked, "I am so excited about your offer. When are you going to put up a cell tower?" The guy got very flustered and Bob told him we have no cell service here. He hung up and never called back.
