Been awhile since we did this!

Post up a pic of your cabin buddies.

Here's is Molly, a Fox Terrier, and Emmy, a lab/hound mix. Both are rescue dogs from the local pound

Molly is a year old and an energy machine. She is full speed all the time but loves to snuggle too.

Emmy, is seven years old and about as chill and laid back as a dog can get. She has pretty serious hip issues and I'm afraid her time is drawing to an end.

Emmy has killed 15 rats at our cabin. BIG rats. Our cabin had been abandoned for 7 years before we bough it. She has single handily decimated the rat population.

Molly caught her first just last week. Her gusto for the job was impressive. She's going to be a good little Hunter.

They go to the cabin with us everytime riding in the bed of the truck, which seems to be their favorite part!

Post up your cabin dogs and tell about them

Here they are my Grand Dogs.
They are rescue dogs.
They both love it at camp.

It was Baxters first time at camp this year he had sensory overload and ran off in the bush three times and was gone twenty minutes each time. So I had to keep him on his lead.
The first evening we were at camp relaxing outside after dinner a bald eagle hovered over us checking Baxter out.

Joe loved running up and down the 1/4 mile sand beach. He never strayed and was leash free. He would not walk more than six feet away from us always keeping us in his sight. He knew when we were packing for camp and would get super excited. I miss him a lot.

Silver, beautiful family members! I had two boxers, Abby and Rudy, both were great dogs and lived to a ripe old age! I miss them terribly.

Thanks for sharing

Gizmo, the 60 lb French bulldog and Gadget, the 96lb english bulldog. Worthless for pretty much everything except loyal companions. They eat, sleep and move around a little bit. Thats about all.

YW Cisco.
How did you train your dogs to catch the rats?
Baxter would sniff around the cabin for hours and wake with every scratch he heard but did not catch one mouse. I caught two in traps.

Silver, I didn't. Haha

Emmy, the older black dog, just has always done it. It's like she hates them!

Once she laid on her back, pulled herself under a floor beam under the cabin Into a space she should have never fit to get to one!

Last week she chewed a 4'x6' piece of blandex IN HALF before finally rooting one out from behind my shop at my main house.

The little girl, Molly, has beniffited from tagging along with big sister for a year and a half now learning the trade. She's really getting the knack.

It really helps that both dogs, tho not purebreds, have a ton of hunting dog traits in them.

Edit- I was just thinking...it's a blessing and a curse to have a rat dog. While they kill a mulittitude of vermin, I can't count the number of times I've restacked my firewood pile, my lumber pile, etc. once they smell one they are relentless until it's dead.

This is Iggy. He also has the instinct of a ratter. Unfortunately for him all we have at the cottage is chipmunks and they have a unlimited number of holes to escape into. That doesn't stop him from trying!

What are the best breeds to have in a rural area where you want a tough defender if necessary, an alarm for danger, one that will go after rodents, but at the same time is a friendly companion dog that won't bite the neighbors or go looking to fight the neighbors dogs?

Perhaps I should start a separate thread

I would say a blue heeler/ Catahoula mix or a Catahoula/ pit mix. Raise them right and you will have a GREAT dog!!

This is my girl, Abigail (abby). She is an Australian Shepard and a pretty good dog. She has a hard time with thunder, loud noises and any 'new' experience, so the first few trips to the cabin were traumatic for her. She is getting used to it now.

We've had 2 aussies, but our older girl, Katie passed away earlier this year, Aussies naturally 'blow' their coat every spring, so to minimize the fur in the house, and to make them more comfortable, we always have had them shaved down to what they call a puppy cut in the spring. After paying $60 per dog for years, I finally thought to myself those fatal words... "How hard can it be?"

Turns out, pretty hard. I did a terrible job of clipping her. It's so bad that I just tell people she has cancer. It's easer to explain it that way. LOL. The first two pictures show her with her bad haircut. The last one show her in full coat.

Here are a few of your current cabin dogs...Sasha (Pitbull) and Karmann (German Shepard). The cabin is definitely one of their favorite places.

Buddy, our cabin dog, 11 months old. When I started building my cabin two years ago I dreamed of having a dog. He's really my wife's lap dog and companion, not what I would have chosen for rural life but he does like to follow me around the property and get involved in general mischief along with me.

This is my dog Bean. He is almost 2yrs old. This year was his first at my cottage. By the end of the season he acted like he owned the place! Cottage time is his vacation time too. He loves getting out of the city and chases all the chipmunks that hang around our cottage.

Lupa is a big Maremma x Akbash X Kuvasz who is meant to be a protector of a flock but really she is just a giant suck. She's a great dog who loves sleeping in front of the woodstove. Once the cabin is complete I'm sure I'll have pictures of her curled up in front of it.
