Happy Birthday to my husband Bob who turns 4 today!!!

As some of you remember, 4 years ago Bob died in our driveway while shovelling snow. His heart stopped due to a sudden cardiac arrest. But for our home defibrillator and the Grace of God who provided me with some level-headed neighbours, Bob would not be here today. It took two shocks to make his heart start beating again.

Cherish and enjoy what is dear to you and always be thankful for what you have. If you own a fairly remote small cabin, make sure you have it well stocked with medical supplies. Home defibrillators are very expensive (I think I paid about $1,500 for ours) but if it saves even one life you will be so glad you had it. I am! It took the ambulance 45 minutes to reach us and Bob would never have survived such a long wait.

Another tip all should remember (stop rolling your eyes GaryO cuz I'm like a broken record) is to always, ALWAYS wait an hour after eating before doing anything strenuous.

Happy Birthday Bob!!

The defibrillator we have is a Philips Heartstart Defibrillator. It is an amazing machine. It begins talking to you as soon as you lift off the pads. The machine walks you through what to do.

Philips is a great company. When they heard of the ordeal, they sent us replacement pads and a new battery for free. They then invited us to their office in the States and presented us with a brand new defibrillator. It was fancier than ours as it had training pads and children's pads. Since we already have one, we donated it to the local Highway Search and Rescue who had one on their "wish list".

We purchased our defibrillator online, but someone told me that Costco sells them now.

Making that donation will likely save someone else, now THAT is a Gift worth Giving !
