I need to clean myself up a bit before I go in to town in the future... We do a lot of weekends at the cabin, and I don't usually shave, and my clothes are a bit wrinkly, coming from my bag...
So lately it seems that every time we go into town, someone asks me if I'm paying with food stamps, or if I'm on some other assistance. Last time someone offered to tell me where my son could get a free back-to-school haircut and school supplies I guess we should shower and dress a little better My off-grid home away from home

I would never ask you that. Most of the welfare bums I see, dress nicer than I do. Brand name clothing, etc.

Maybe I should dress down a few notches then?

I'll second that Salty...they can afford nicer clothes than I can as a productive member of society...

LOL! I wear that unshaven, unkempt, dirty jeans and workboots look on purpose when at the cabin for a stretch (mostly because I have actually been working on something). I consider it a badge of honor to blend in with the locals and loggers up my way as opposed to the weekend tourists in town with their unscuffed hiking boots and designer trail clothes.

We have many tourists in town and I perfer to resemble the locals by wearing my workboots and dirty jeans. Often drive into town an get a coffee at the local bakery then sit outside and watch the tourists. Much easier to blend in with a couple days beard growth.

I'd have fun with people making those kind of comments SE OHIO,
I'd be like, "No, I don't need assistance". Doing as much "Manual Labor" that I do, I didn't have time for anything else before I came into town..... Let them think.

I wear grubbies all the time. They are clean in the AM, dirt in the evening. I wear duck brown Carhartt double front work pants with suspenders and a Key hickory/logger shirt, cut to convert to short sleeves or sometimes, no sleeves at all. And a Carhartt black work vest. If the wife wants to go out on the town, I always promise her that "I will wear my best grubbies"
As for unshaven, yes, last time I shaved was 1997. I do trim my beard and its not like those duck guys or ZZ top.

I walked into town 2 years ago to hit up the grocery store, town btw is 25 miles from my place. i had a pair of worn out hiking boots, faded bluejeans, a red flannel shirt with a wool vest, a homemade leather hat, a long beard, i had a cane/walking stick made from a branch, on my back was a homemade pack (wooden frame, cloth bags) and i had a water bottle strapped over my shoulder. as i walked in people kept shouting "headed cali-foria-way?" "thars gold in them thar hills" and "jerihmiah johnson made his way into the mountains..."
