Looks more like a advertisement for more socialism./liberalism/less freedoms. Speaks of income equality, but instead of a rising tide floats all boats, they approach is as a lowering tide gets all boats stuck equally in the mud. Not for me.

But we are on a road where big corporations and some very wealthy individuals have extraordinary influence over what our government does. And that is not about to change, IMO. The supreme court has just said it's okay for people to give donations to as many candidates as they want to. In other words it is okay to buy as many legislators as you can afford. Therefore the very wealthy have much greater influence in making laws that favor them and what they want than the rest of us. Very little is equal between "them" and "us" anymore.

I am not commenting on the article itself but rather on the sorry state of the times when, if indeed this has NASA money behind it, studies such as this are what we allow our tax dollars to be spent on.

bobrok- I felt the same way, why is NASA even funding this kind of research? It seems like everything is just a free-for-all with these big corporations and government agencies. But I suppose its better than homeland security funding it. Yeah not really.

Don, I am in agreement on the power. I wish people would have enough sense to terminate the entrenched politician, how many years is too much? Congress is up every 2 years and Dingle has been there for 54 years? That is crazy. That job should be a small term of service, then move on. And I'd like to see tradesman, housewives, etc, why doenst it always have to be lawyers? They use sneaky tactics to erode our liberties and freedoms while making us feel good for giving them away. Seems like they get there with good intentions, then before long, their only interest is holding on to power and re-election by buying votes with taxpayers money. Also, like to see us go back to the way it used to be in the way where the state legislatures appointed the 2 senators from each state. This was a good idea, the founders wanted to be able to keep Washington from having too power and the states have more control.
The new codeword" income equality" seems to mean just taking from producers and giving to non producers. http://themonkeycage.org/2013/05/27/why-did-state-legislators-give-away-their-power-t o-pick-senators-on-the-origins-of-the-17th-amendment/

One word, "fear". If they can create fear, then they will spend our millions to combat it and pass laws to protect us while diminishing our freedoms. We not only let it happen, we encourage it.

@beachman: can you explain yourself more fully, please? Who is 'they' and what 'fear' for example. Are you referring to national security? How are we encouraging 'them'. ...I'm just an enquiring mind here...

Ahh don't worry how can the genetic modification of food and animals and men coupled with the coming singularity ever be a problem. Just sign up for the U N and our own self righteous politicians to redistribute your wealth and property. Al Gore can use his plane and Al Jazera money to help.
By the way I thought that the President had directed NASA to focus on Muslim outreach, not Agenda 21.

Bobrok - the article on the collapse of civilization is indeed interesting. As most threads go, there are contributions that stray off track and I was generally following that tack. I do not have a cute category for the acronym THEY other than Those who Have Everything (not sure about the "Y"). Anyway to further advance what I was stating is that the general air of who controls us, either through the monetary system or government appears to be driven largely by greed. Admittedly, there are many that strive for the common good but there are many more who do not. Getting back to the original thread - tell me, what is your opinion of the article and do you believe what they propose?

beachman, thanks for the reply! I want you to know that in no way was I calling you out on your post and that I appreciate hearing back from you.
The short answer: my initial opinion of the article is disagreement on several statements: 1) ...coming decades...essentially doomed..."Elites" consuming too much...famine among Commoners...causes the collapse of society OK, so what is collapsing here, a society or a civilization. You can't use these terms interchangeably in the same sentence. 2) inequality must be "greatly reduced" or (OR? as in we will have a vote/choice) population growth must be "strictly controlled" 3)...set of four equations representing human society... WHAAA??? 4) hard-line U.S. Republicans...taken up the banner...future is socialism and that is just off the top of the article.
My long answer will have to wait until I can read and digest the study. Commenting on the article is one thing, but I'd love to read these 32 pages. I'm especially interested to find in which of the four human equations I belong.
I appreciate your tongue-in-cheek acronym for "Those who Have Everything" and I get a laugh out of things like this. My contribution for the Y could, perhaps, be "YAY" but, on the other hand, I don't personally feel controlled by anyone in particular.
Unfortunately I will be traveling for the next few weeks so it may be some time before I can get back to you. I am making my way back north after having spent a few winter months in Florida (waiting to see if this generates any snide remarks about me being a T.H.E.Y.)
Lastly, I don't really know how far "off-topic" we will be allowed to diverge here, but it sure would be fun to have discourse on things such as this. I'll have to let CabinBuilder make this decision. I think we can have rational, even-tempered discussion, but, alas, I don't own the forum.
If this thread is a 'go' let's hear from some others!
P.S. When in FL we stay in Cape Canaveral, about 10 miles as the crow flies from Kennedy Space Center. I walk out on the beach from our town house, watch launches, and see the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building where the shuttles were assembled prior to launch. I've visited KSC 5 times in the last 3 years and I am awed each and every time I go. I won't apologize for NASA if they have their hands in this study, but on the other hand, standing underneath the shuttle Atlantis now on display, it sends shivers up and down my spine and sure makes me proud to be an American!
