Hattie, So, so sorry. My heart goes out to your DIL and son, as well as you and Bob. How many weeks was she? I know that devastated feeling and I know time will help, but it hurts so, so much to lose a baby. God bless all of you and that sweet, sweet little angel.

Thanks everyone. She was only 2 1/2 months along, but it is still very sad. We were all so excited to have another baby in the family!

2 1/2 months is plenty long enough to have many hopes and dreams of the future I'd like to share a poem I wrote. I actually just completed it during our last visit to the cabin. The situation is different, but the message is the same
God Had Other Plans
I thought we were done, our family was complete. Grandchildren we awaited it would be such a treat.
But God had other plans that I needed to respect. My job was to prepare He helped me to accept.
But my brain, please see, it played tricks on me. I questioned could we do this and what we would miss.
Relax said daddy and listen to your heart. A baby to love is a gift from above.
So plans were made and futures decided. Excitement grew, our dreams we recited.
But God had other plans and we feared the worse. A state of denial that could not be reversed.
What do we do, and how do we cope? Remember to pray and don't give up hope!
But what about our plans?! What do you say? This child we love you just swept away!
We had to say goodbye on that cold winter day. To honor and grieve, to bury and pray.
Our tiny angel was gone. So many tears we cried. The grief overwhelmed us, as much as we tried.
Darkness masked our souls as emptiness consumed us. A state of illusion only added to our confusion.
Why would you give just to take away? I don't understand and I hate that damn day!
But God had other plans in time we would see. We needed to have faith and leave it all up to Thee.

Thank you, Hattie. I know you have 4 grandchildren, are some of those theirs, or was this their first pregnancy? I'm keeping them in my prayers.

Three of our grandsons are theirs, so this was going to be child number 4 for them. I know our daughter-in-law has always wanted to have lots of kids but her biological clock has begun to tick (she will be 37 in the fall). Her husband (my step-son) is a nurse and she is a stay-at-home Mom. They are incredible parents, live very frugally and are just plain, good people. Their parenting skills are pretty amazing and their boys are turning out great! We were all so excited when we heard they were expecting again. I hope they do try again in the future and I know this precious baby is in God's hands now.
On a happier note, have any of you women tried making your own vanilla extract? This is one of my latest fads to try. *LOL* I started my first batch in February and oh boy is it smelling and looking amazing!!! To do it right, you are supposed to let it sit for 6 months as it mellows with age. I have 3 older bottles down in the cold cellar that I shake up when I am down there and a new batch in the kitchen that I shake daily. I purchased some empty maple syrup bottles with lids that I will be bottling the extract in and giving away as gifts. I have been taking tiny tastes of the oldest batch occasionally and it is amazing how it changes over time. I have so many friends who want some as a gift that I had to order more vanilla beans online to begin some more. *S* If you have never tried it, I highly recommend it!!!! Easy, fun and very satisfying!!!

Here is how to make vanilla extract:
You will need 3 quart size mason jars with lids (I sterilize mine but you probably don't need to. I just boil them for 10 minutes.)
I buy 101 Madagascar vanilla beans 15+ cm near gourmet splits on ebay. Divide the beans into 3 piles because they will make 3 bottles of extract.
3 bottles of vodka (750 ml each)
----------------
Take one third of the beans and split them down the middle (some of the ones I buy are already split). With a sharp knife, scrape the inside of the bean. This black stuff is called the caviar of the vanilla. Put it in a small bowl and then chop up the bean into small pieces and place in the same bowl as the caviar. Do this for all of the beans (it will take awhile - that is why I do only one jar at a time, one month apart).
Put the beans into a mason jar and pour the vodka over it. Put the lid on securely. Shake the jar really well and put it in a dark, cool place (I put mine in a lunch bag to keep it dark and keep it in the kitchen, otherwise I will forget to shake it).
Repeat for the other two batches of beans. You will end up with 3 mason jars of vanilla extract. As I said, I actually did mine one month apart but you can do it all at once into three bottles if you wish.
Every day shake your bottle(s) of vanilla extract. After one month you can move them somewhere else (for me that is my cold cellar) and just shake them when you remember (I actually do this about every other day or so.).
In 6 months your vanilla extract will be ready to use. Filter it through a coffee filter (I haven't got to this part yet with mine) and bottle it. Ideally it should go into dark coloured bottles, but I couldn't find any, so I will be using maple syrup bottles with lids that I will sterilize first. Voila! You have a whole lot of home made vanilla extract!!

oh no I am so sorry! my oldest daughter has wanted another child for so long. her baby is now five years old and she is going to be 28 soon. she still has plenty of time but the yearning is strong. about 2 years ago she had a miscarriage also about the same time. she has PCOS and thyroid problems. she has lost a great amount of weight and is in wonderful shape now. I suffered two miscarriages also one was at five and a half months. don't know a lot of women who haven't been through this it's very difficult to get through

I am up drinking instant coffee because my arm hurt and couldn't sleep. got the deck fixed today much better. ropef off an area for a dog kennel. the second square of the garden is almost ready to plant. my strawberries in the pallet fell over when I was trying to fix a brace so I put them in a bucket on the porch. I am hopefully going to put a little storage shed where the old barn was. this will be a project this summer. worked on the front porch to this needs to be re nailed and painted. I am having to feed the little tiny kitten because the older kittens are starving it out. I have a black rubber tub I bought to use as a shower but I am going to put it outside on bricks and use it for a hot tub lol I setup my sewing machine. haven't used it in a long long time. but I am making me a Sun dress. have to see how it comes out. I know all of this activity is just stalling on my part to keep from having to clean up the up stairs haha at one time I did have it clean and nicely decorated. will have to put on Charlie Daniels steel witness and drink a mountain dew and get at it!
hope all of you are doing well
I was not happy with the solar lantern I made it does not give very much light. a candle would be brighter. so I put nails to hold them on the back deck, the solar lights I mean. the next square of the garden is going to be at least half green beans. I bent a hug panel into a triangle and that is going to be for cucumbers. tomorrow I will work on the chicken coop. just going to answer an a part of the old livestock barn. its small won't take much. then make it or put a screen door on it. pallets work so good for animal housing as long as they are sturdy and can be covered well. okay enough for my ramblings.

Hi Ladies. I'm Lynn of "Arlynn". Husband is Arlen We are new here. Our goal is to have a small homestead to retire on. The only thing we ever do on vacation is to rent someone's cabin! We figured it would be great to just live in one so that's what we are planning for our future.
Nice to meet you all. Everyone seems like family here! I am loving reading all the posts. I work about 60 hours a week away from home so I don't have a lot of time. I'm at work right now having lunch.
We haven't started building yet but we at least we have a better idea of what we are going to do now.
I look forward to getting to know you all.
Lynn
