I bring a 22 rifle and a shot gun and always have a sidearm with me. Just in case an 2 legged or 4 legged threat would come around also for target shooting that is also fun. What do you bring?

I don't bring anything for protection, but I bring a lot for target shooting. I have a small arms range and a 600 yrd gong range for the Sharps. I also hunt grouse and white tail deer.

Often I bring an 1873 Special Sporting Rifle in a 45 Colt, a 1860 Henry 44-40, a 1895 Cowboy Marlin 45-70, a 1874 Quigly Sharps 45-110 buffalo gun, 22 cal Henry Golden boy. old Springfield 22. A couple 45 Peacemakers, a Smith and Wesson New model Three target 45 Colt. And sometimes Walther P-22, Browning Buckmark 22, Colt Diamondback 22. If it's bird season , I might bring a Beretta White Wing 20 ga. over and under. Or my wife's Mossberg Silver Reserve 410 O&U. I don't usally bring more then ten at a time. I reload so I always have test rounds to try.

DEEEEEEEEEEET. Thankfully that is all we need to worry about.
Must be a CDN thing. And speaking for myself I like our wildlife...If I wanted a cabin/cottage in sanitized Europe I would have bought one where the wildest thing is a semi domesticated fox.
And judging from the reports from many US TV stations West Nile Virus is becoming rampant this late summer/early fall in many states. So a little mosquitoCx. pipiens/tarsalis is likely the most dangerous thing at the cabin for many folks.

The Buckmark is a great pack gun. Very accurate.
Bugs you have the wrong idea, We don't shoot hardly any animals, especially if there's just a couple. In our country , if you shoot one deer the others will make it though the winter better. I feed and see them though the winter. The state does nothing for them. I do.

The Buckmark is especially sweet with a Tactical Solutions Trail-Lite barrel. It has a wonderful balance with the 5.5" length and even more accurate to boot.

We keep a Mossberg 550 12 ga pump in the cabins secret space. Also I usually leave a Marlin 1895 45-70 in another secret space. My BFR 45 LC travels with me most places I go.

I went to a neighbor's cabin because I saw his gate was open. I had never met him and this might have been my only opportumity. As we approached on his long driveway I could see him outside talking to a companion and he quickly ran inside then came back out. I bet he went in to strap on his holster.
There were 4 of us (wife & 2 little girls).

Deet, I dont fear any wildlife, even thought we do have wolves and grizzly bear, along with moose and the other normally non dangerous stuff. Its remote, and all my neighbors are nice folks, but just in case, some whack job comes around thinking prey is easy in the remoteness....
No one knows I "pack heat", its just there, unnoticed.

Frankly I'm a bit worried about this neighbor, he seemed to be in distress and told me about some life-changing problems. I'd like to know him because he's the closest, but......?????
I don't worry about people who shoot a lot, for challenge or for fun, hunt, or collect. Thats all normal life. The ones I worry about are the paranoid, or the unbalanced, the ones who seem mentally prepared (to shoot a person). They are more than ready to tell you how likely it is that they will have to protect themselves, in disbelief that 99.999% of others are surviving well without lethal protection. And they're not going to hide behind a tree and fire a warning shot, that only lets the intruder know you're a puss. And always adding that (darn the system!) one hardship they are burdened with is they have to shoot to kill, because whenever the threat survives, "there's all kinds of trouble." I have lots of friends who carry guns and its a popular point of view everyone says that part.
If I came visiting, carrying a gun, that might be the cue they are looking for, "to protect themselves." Do you go visiting neighbors while packing your heat? Or do you just not go?

Interesting thread. The Canadians' number one thing is bug spray. *S* Me too. We have lots of wild animals here, but we carry Deet, bear spray, bear bangers and an air horn. Sometimes I carry a knife, but that's for sniping for gold. *S* We have come across many bears, but noise is enough to keep them away (even the Mama's with their cubs). Oh, and hubby installed an Awooooooogggaaaah horn on our rhino for when we go out exploring. I'm not sure if the bears are really afraid of it, but it's fun to listen to. *S*

how do you think the food on your table gets there? You either grow and harvest it, or shoot, skin, and cook it.

I do not go out into nature and want to kill it, but hiking in the backwoods near my cabin is grizzly country. I carry a S&W .500. I carry a Tokarev 7.62x25 there otherwise. My wife carries a .44. And I keep a .17 for pack dogs or coyotes.

Re: hunters and hunting. If a person eats meat or uses an animal product that requires the killing of the animal they are being hypocritical. It matters not if the animal being eaten was killed in a factory dis-assembly line setting with the meat presented to the consumer in a plastic covered tray or if the animal was killed out in the wild by a hunter with a firearm or a bow. No difference. The animal was killed. I believe only people who never eat meat, who never use any animal product that requires the killing of an animal, have a legitimate voice on the subject. And then it is only a matter of a difference in opinion, a difference in a life style choice.
