If you have any hills I find a solid handle instead of a rope is best it won't come up behind and trip you .

I have been doing a lot of debating with myself what kind of sled I want. I went to second hand store today and they had 3 sets of skis. I bought a set for 5$ and I plan on making a Smitty Sled. The people like them and they pull very easy what I have read. I will build it as light as possible and build it so I can break it down for storage. Thanks

I bought a 5 or 6 ft toboggan at a yard sale, but haven't been doing much that Id need it for a long time.
I found a US military harness for a person to pull a sled. I recently saw one online about $10.
Just looked, found the harness

Good luck with the smithy sled! My son is very happy with the one I made for him.he likes the portability with it and being able to break it down. I went ice fishing with him before the smithy sled and with the hut, auger etc it was a tough go pulling it across a lake with lots of snow. Now he says it's easy peasy. The skis make all the difference in the world. Keep us posted on how you make out!

I got a start on this sled but have a question about how to and what to use for the bolt that goes through the cross member. there will be two stubs or bolts etc. that will hold the cross member in place. What should I use and how did you do yours.
Thanks

Yeah, my dogs ran me over a few years ago. I was pulling them in my pulk sled a few years ago and it overtook me going down a steep hill.
You should have seen their faces when they went flying past. This is my set up.
Pulk Sled
Pull Poles
How poles attach to belt
Pole ends and connection eye bolt
I made the belt but you can buy a cheap belt and just sew the loops on it.
Most people just attach eye bolts to pvc with epoxy but I was experimenting with fiberglass driveway markers. They turned out to be not stiff enough. Hence, thats when my dogs ran me over.

When i built my sled if I recall correctly, I drilled holes into the cross pieces and used to t-nuts and screwed a long bolt into it. I then drilled holes into the riser blocks and the bolts from the cross members dropped into that. The weight of the sled holds it all in place nicely.
