I want to post a message to my wonderful parents. I know that no one here knows them, but I want to acknowledge the part that they have played in our cabin build.
My mom and dad made the trek out to our land before we bought it so that they could give us advice (from NY at the time:). My dad had an off the grid property when he was younger (and still misses it today), and even though the blow down was so heavy that we couldn't walk onto the property, he said that it was ok. And I love him. and I trust him. and so we did the scary thing and bought the land.
And when we put up our microcabin they came for a visit (and we rented the big cabin on the hill so they had somewhere nice to sleep) but every am they came down to "our" place, cooked there, clammed and crabbed at the beach, and used the little porta potty before the composting toilet was installed. They only went back up to sleep long after dark making us feel like we had a palace and not a mere 160 sq feet.
And when we were offered the excavation, drainage rock, and septic and didn't have the $$$ they gave us a loan to get the work done without hesitation, as it is all about building our dreams for our little family the way that they built their little families dreams.
And today when they forgave more than half of the loan for that excavation and septic as all they want is for us to have our dream for our little family... I have no words to describe how grateful I am.
Mom and Dad I love you so much for giving us the opportunity to live this dream. I am lucky to have you both still, and so are my children for having such wonderful role models. I aspire to be to them what you are to me and I love you.
Thank you.

What a great post! I'm sure your parents are just as proud of you as you are of them.

What an inspiring tribute you've shared. Your parents sound very much like my own. They too cared so much for their children that they left the farm in a trust with conditions that it can never be sold unless all of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are in agreement. Their little farm is unique in that it is surrounded by state forest where nobody will ever become a neighbor. It is on this farm that I have built My Ohio Cabin. View looking south

nicalisa you made me cry! I feel the same way...my parents were great and even though my father is gone I know he is pulling for us from above. My mother lives in Florida and each time she comes up to visit going to see the progress we have made at our cabin is one of the highlights of her trip...I think she is just so happy to see Mr. Troll and I finally do something for ourselves after doing everything for our 9 children. Thank you...it was a wonderful way to start my day :)

Beautiful. That's what good parents do. I just hope that someday my daughter will realize the sacrifices her father and I have made.

Erins Mom, Someday she will know. I can only imagine the time you have gone through of late. Remember, we can only teach our values and beliefs and hope that they make the right decision. sometimes letting go is the most difficult thing that we must do as parents, especially when we do not agree with the choices our children are making. With hope and grace, your daughter will learn from recent events and apply those learnings moving forward through her life.
