Got Starlink. It works great. Wasn't sure if it would since I live in the woods. So far, so good.

I use Xplornet (Canada) Satellite, which works great too. Only PITA is when there is 10"+ of snow/ice on the dish... (deicing windshield washer juice in a hand pump pressure sprayer = quick fix) Psst, also handy to get iced solar panels cleared...

I've been loving starlink at my place, except for the monthly fee. Seems to be double the "normal" internet rate, but I guess those companies don't need to launch satellites into orbit and I don't have any other options.
The cool thing about starlink dish is it melts the snow, maybe some slight issues during really heavy snow but its normally back up and running quickly without having to manually clean it off....

Quoting: jsahara24 except for the monthly fee. I cancelled my dish account. It was almost $115 per month. So the $120 starlink price isn't so bad.

Our Starlink is currently up and running at the Colorado cabin (we are in AZ) to give us access to a wifi camera.... except the camera hasn't connected in the last three days, hoping it reconnects at some point. It tells me "weak signal" when connected but limited locations to mount the camera.
The good thing is without us or the neighbors there whom we share our connection with, Starlink is averaging ~28w, snow melt is not on (we don't ever use snow melt and have yet to have much build-up on the 2nd gen Dishy. I do see ice sickles hanging off it on occasion so guessing it generates some heat without snow melt on). Normally Starlink averages ~45w - 50w when we are there using it regularly.
Running it off 24v/100ah, self-heating lifepo4 battery and have Starlink in sleep mode from 11pm - 6am. We figured 2 - 3 days of battery life when the panels are snowed over but with this lower draw maybe 4 - 5 days +. The camera has its own solar panel and battery.... which may be low right now, hence no connection.
We love the fast speed and low latency of Starlink. We used to have Viasat and the latency was so bad trying to make a phone call was painful!

Fair enough, I am comparing it to cable internet I have at another property which is ~60$/month and faster speeds. However without starlink I would be very unhappy, we used to have Hughes net and that is basically worthless IMO.

You guys are making me feel good .
Some years ago they put in a fiber line down the main road, charging the house owners to hook up. I told them I only have a part time cabin. They said welll if you bury a conduit we’ll pull in a line, free. This was me the next day..
Internet service is $29.95 a month. TV streaming, downloads mega fast. Always up.
Oddly, at my city house I have nothing. Rooftop TV antenna, cell phone internet.

Camera up and running again. Guessing the battery in the camera might have run down because of snow on its panel. Says the battery is full now and no mention of weak signal... go figure!
BTW I see Starlink is now averaging 30w. I suppose that is because the camera is "talking" to it.
Only the three closest panels, 750w, are charging the shop system. The remaining four are for the cabin and are off. Footprints are from friends checking on the place. Got a notification from the camera when they were there. A bit of a scare as I didn't recognize the vehicle right away then remembered they had bought a beater pickup for hauling wood! We tried Starlink at our cabin last fall, and it is technically very impressive. Unfortunately the monthly cost here in Canada is a bit steep for us to justify (now $190/month for Roam), as we do have spotty but functional cellular based internet as an alternative. Those in Canada now have the option of Starlink Mini, with a $70/month 50 GB plan. We're considering switching our hardware to the mini to allow us that option.

Anyone doing star link just for cameras in a zone with cell signal..you can buy very cheap $80-100 solar cellular PTZ cameras that use a $120yr sim card. I have had one up and running for about 1yr

Had a quick look, those are pretty nice. Only reason why I would need one might be to see my battery bank voltage, not that it matters if I’m not there, nothing is on. I do have motion detect trail cams that send a picture if anything trips one. No tilt or zoom of course. There must be a thousand other reasons to use one.

They do show live video. I can see the snow depth and general condition of the place. My battery bank voltage isnt something I check when gone as theres no load on them but the CC is still on.

This would be far better, and allow us to watch the ice form on the lake as well. We're water-access, so waiting for hard water season now before we can access our property.

If you see any drones, see where they’re coming from..
Actually I could use one now. We left the cabin with a huge storm coming. Trees down everywhere, no idea what shape it’s in, won’t know until I get back out there.
