There is a Massive Thread on this (dramatized) piece in DIYSolar... Cluckage Alert ! Grey Market issues have been ongoing to varying degrees from the 1990's when similar stuff started to happen with Computer & Electronics/Office equipment.

It got so bad at one point, that a US Bandged HP Laser printer would not get serviced in Canada as it had a US part number and not authorized for sale in Canada. That is one of NUMEROUS examples that happened then and has continued since to different degrees.

GET READY for more Grey Marklet Product cutoffs ! Additionally, Tariff/Duty Countermeasures "WILL" come that will result in complications & support issues.

If you buy a gray market item you have to expect some issues finding parts and service. The fact that it connects to the internet and may need software to work make it that much easier.

We also mustn't forget, there has been much discussion about allowing Web Connected things to be able to communicate off continent etc and how some wish to limit/prevent such. No idea how all of that will work out but I am certain, it won't be great for owners of products that need updates & upgrades etc.

I went about a year without a computer/phone 2022-3. Boy things sure changed. Can’t pull up any site now without a phony site, signing up for something, logging in, cookies, passwords etc..

Seemed so simple before. Now everyone walking down the street has their face buried in the phone.

Regarding the cookies warning, and permission granting (or not) that come up on many websites.....

It used to be that the vast majority of websites placed many cookies on your computer without asking or informing you. They just did it.

The EU GDPR is responsible for websites now informing users about cookies and needing the user to grant or deny permission to drop cookies on our devices.

Their law came into effect in 2018 IIRC. At first only sites situated in the EU followed that law. Sites in the US laughed at the requirement for the most part. But a few years ago the EU began to reach out to companies from other parts of the world to comply if they reallywanted people in the EU to use their sites. So here we are today with choices to make.

I think it is a good thing. We have a choice to click "accept all cookies" like what was happening in the old days. Or we can say no or selective. Choices are good, IMO. The US should have similar consumer protection laws, IMO.

Cookies are not all bad. Cookies are why we can go to forums like this and not have to log in each time. The cookies recognize our device. But if I visit a website I may have no interest in revisiting, I can deny cookies if I so choose.
