Twas the weeks before Christmas, and all through the house.
Extreme concentration, on the computer and mouse.
The presents were all placed, in the virtual cart with care.
Knowing that Amazon, soon would be there.
Patiently waiting, I heard such a clatter.
It was the Amazon van, it's motor in tatters.
I sprang into action...the road now was blocked.
I went to pick up, the order I'd got.
With a 4 wheel drive, I cleared the way.
Knowing that Fed Ex would be there next day.
Times are a changing...it all goes so quick.
But I never used a snatch rope, when it just was St. Nick!

35 to 50 degrees warmer here most any time of the day. I'm not heading home any time soon. I have cousins here. I'm doing some finish carpentry for one. Lots of things to do, hike, fly, fish, eat, and help out with some work a little. I have the use of an 85 Toyota with innumerable miles.

Pretty sparse under the tree this year. My wife gave me 2 nice cabin sweatshirts but both, size L, are too small. So she now has 2 new shirts…
My friend gave me this old vise. Off a ship he says. Not that big, 4†jaws I think, but boy is it heavy, I can barely lift it. Looked online, most new ones are under 50 lbs.. Don’t make em like they used too.

'Vise', sorry, got enough 'vices' already.
One thing unusual about this one, the whole head revolves 180 degrees to turn up a pipe clamp visible underneath. Modern vises usually have pipe jaws directly underneath the main jaws. Maybe for prop shafts, but it sure adds to the 100b. weight of this thing.
Got it set up now outside the cabin on the table above the generator. Actually could use one up there, other ones are down the hill in the shop.

I've got one similar. It's a 6 inch pipe vise.
Wilton brand. It's mounted on my welding table.
Really handy cause you can spin the work piece almost any way needed.

Cool! Looks like, similar to mine, instead of a big 'acme' thread for the jaws, it has a regular thread with a nut out back.
I haven't found a way to lock the 'spinning' axis down, yours have that? I'm at the city house today, escaping the wet and mud from a storm, can't look at mine..

As your facing the vise, the lock is on the right side. Mine also has the thread in the pipe part with a castle nut out the back.

Back at the cabin, looked over the vice, I still don’t see that spin lock. Maybe I got the economy model..

Wow that's odd. You would think that there has to be something to lock it when you spin it.
The only thing I could spot. Is on the side in the pic. It sorta looks like a cam over type thing.
Is there a hinge of some sort on that collar?
Maybe a good wire wheel might uncover something.?

I wonder if it might tighten like a collet on a milling machine. You could see if it spins free without anything in it. Then try putting something in it and tighten the jaws to see if it will hold it in place.
I remember something like that in a machine shop I believe.

I think you got it! It doesn’t rotate easily anyway, but I just clamped something in it and couldn’t budge it. I’ll try again tomorrow..

Well you nailed it Darz. With the jaws loose I knocked the head, back and forth to loosen things up, was then able to easily swivel it. Then clamped something in, no swivel. Mystery solved, thanks again.
Also, surprisingly how weathered it is, the jaw teeth and anvil look fresh.

Finally got that Vice off the bench and screwed to a fence post. Already have one down below at the shop.
