...and got a different old cat. . Yep. We sold one that has given us some axle bearing issues and got another that should handle the rocky terrain better. '89 D4 gone and a '94 D5H takes her place. Newish paint job.

My dad had only Cats, std D7's, then got a high-track which extended track & sprocket life, even in the sand country land clearing most of his jobs were in. I operated some, then we added a 966 loader with a custom rake, really improved the land clearing efficiency. I didnt take over the business, sunup to sundown 6 days a week and service work on Sun was not my idea of a 'life'. He loved it, and was an artist with a cutting edge that he couldnt even see on a dozer blade.

ICC, this should allow you to make a large enough fire break you can ride out any wildfire. Gravel doesnt burn and you dont have to mow it either.

We have log roads that double as firebreaks. The D5H is more capable than the D4 we sold, plus much of the land has been thinned to where it acts like a fuel break. Still have trees but wider spaced and we try to keep the small shrubby growth in check. for 50 feet or so back from the road edges.
The D5H is a turbo diesel whereas the D4 was not. The power difference at over 7500 feet is quite noticeable.
This D5H is also a special skidder model; a D5HTSK. It has a log grapple and arm at the rear end instead of a ripper or winch. The undercarriage is different for better balance when skidding heavy grapples of logs.

I love old iron and that piece is exquisite.
Is it hydro or cable steering?

The steering brakes are held in the engaged position by springs and disengaged hydraulically.
