Don't know if there are any Tom Russell fans out there, but what a great Americana poet. Gary O, if you haven't heard this guy, I suspect you'll like him :-) To the cowboy in all of us cabiners - enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cwh-h6pHN1Y&feature=related

Alright Borrego, we've traveled down memory lane with your artists, some that are no more. Thank you. I'll avoid turnin' this into a deliverance competition, or a Devil went down to Georgia 'do or die' thing. But now I gotta lay one on you. No, I won't throw down some Hendrix, or Nugent...although I'm sorely tempted....but the theme is cabin music. So, one of my all time favorite musical artists is Stevie Ray. Gone w-a-a-a-a-y before his time. So, on one of your cool desert eves, when the sun decides you've had enough, and you, your lady (and of course Lola) are watchin' the spectacular event of our mother turnin' the lights low, do yourself a flavour, and hook up with SRV's Tinpan Alley.
Hope you enjoy this, pard. My version of dessert for the desert.
CRANK IT UP!

Yes! Very nice and i wonder what he'd be doing if still with us. Hard to go wrong with any of his stuff. Lenny comes to mind as a good cocktail hour in the desert kinda song... hmmmmm....
BTW, I'm a blues guitarist myself and he is one of my influences for sure! Dang it, now I've gotta go on YT and do some blues research :-) standby tonite, buddy.
Anyone else got any 'cabin music? C'mon now!!

You are spot on with your taste in music! Americanna & country = the best.
I was a hippie kid in the 60s and 70s groovin' on all that stuff.
Then came the 80s...ahhhh the 80s. If it weren't for the big hair bands I would have never discovered country and americanna genre.
Thank God for the 80s. :)

I am a blank wall when it comes to 80's rock music.
This is a 'true' story: I borrowed a friend's van (remember vans back in the 80's?) to make a delivery to a customer. He had his AM only radio set to a country radio station and I was afraid to change the channel. WELL, that, dare I say, was a divining moment in my life! I can remember that very day that I discovered "the other side" of musical entertainment. To this day I truly consider it an epiphany. No kidding! In retrospect I have to admit, I was a fan of Willie Nelson back in the 70s when nobody had even heard of him. I think I always liked country music but just didn't KNOW IT. Or else I didn't allow myself to believe it back then for fear of being ostracised by my fellow hippies. Eagles, Poco, NRPS, Ronstadt, Kris and Rita anyone?
Regardless, I cannot legitimately post favorite rock songs from the 80s as they simply do not exist in my mind. Clapton is OK, but I relate more to Hank, Haggard, Jones, Waylon, Strait and the like, in addition to the Americanna genre such as EmmyLou, Alison and Lucinda Williams, to name just a *very* few.
If anyone streams audio to their computer or smartphone while they are driving and wants links just ask.....
Great thread...need more input from others!!!

I'm a local blues player myself too.. My personal favs are Taj Majal, Freddy King, Buddy Guy, but love a lot of newer music like Ray La Montangne.. That guy has got soul... Not exactly blues, but I consider it blues.

Smitty - I'm a fan of 'em all, particularly the Les Paul/ Marshall guys (guess what I play?) One of my early and still main faves is Clapton, with the Bluesbreakers and Yardbirds. Here's a good clip of Gary Moore and BB. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqAuuIDU2sw
Nice one TurkeyH, I find most current country leaves me cold, good to hear a youngster still going for his roots..
Bobrok - I'd love some links, and yes Merle is the real deal, saw him twice in the past 10 years and he is better than ever, kinda doing western swing now! My favorite song of his could be 'Drink up and be somebody' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ecix6yoy_Q

Ever seen him? I saw him twice and he is possibly the best and purest bluesman out there. I may like Albert Kings style a bit more, but Mr. BB is the bomb. And a gentleman as well.......

Neat thread Borrego.
At the cabin we rarely listen to music preferring the natural concerts provided for us by the catbirds, warblers, sparrows, orioles and grosbeaks plus the coyotes.
That said when at home, working, I listen to the blues (the older the better) ie Son House, RJ, Sonny McGhee, Lightning Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Brownie McGhee and the list goes on. Not that I shun classic rock and I always like to go to see Willie when he is in town or Sir Elton. Couple of weeks ago Burton Cummings put on a great show of good old fashioned rock and roll.)
I also, after seeing O Brother Where Art Thou, started listening to Appalachian mountain folk music. (Can't get more cabiny than that!) A movie Songcatcher solidified my enjoyment of this type of music (The second sound track from the movie Songcatcher II is excellent.)
As a ps: We rescued an old cabinet phonograph circa 1930's from my family. The records are priceless/timeless recordings of everything from the Carter family to Scottish pipes, classical and opera. We wind it up every once in awhile and escape into a different age.

Well I must admit (having started this thread), that at least for now there is no music allowed at the cabin. One day, yes, but now the radio gets clicked off as soon as we turn off the S2 onto the desert road leading to our place.

Any women got anything to add. Part of the idea of doing this was to introduce each other to some new stuff....
