I have heard this, and my neighbor in town makes practice of this - however I don't think it makes up for his general lack of lawn care otherwise.
When used in combination with other proper lawn care methods I believe it would be effective.

Very interesting and I have been spreading ashes for many years around the native cedar and berry trees.
I read about doing this and I can say I don't know if it has helped but it hasn't hurt. The mountain red cedar seems to grow slow not matter what you do to them. The wild fruit seem to produce very well on my place regardless of doing nothing or caring for them.
