We met in an online chat room about 12 years ago, when aol was THE chat progam, and it cost by the minute
She told me my location was about two hours away from her one day, so I set out to meet her, and only four and a half hours later I arrived at her home town , checked into my hotel.. called her at the determined time and only got her voice mail , about two hours after that she arrived at the hotel to inform me she had fallen asleep.
I knew then if I could I should hang on to this girl. Honest, humble and care free.. and no sense of time.. all things that im sure have enabled her to tolerate me for so long!

it was the fall of fall of '93 when i was driving home from work. i saw a dodge omni sitting at a intersection of a residential area with smoke coming from under the hood. I rolled up in a '80 corvette, a daily driver of mine at the time, and tried to put out the fire caused by leaves trapped around the exhaust system. well that didn't work and the car was a total loss but i got a thank you card and a date. after a few years of on and off dating she decided to tell me to piss off. so she loaded her gear and went to collage in Marquette. as she was getting in her car i realized i loved her and told her that. she told me i was an a..hole for waiting to the last minute. two years later we married and it just keeps getting better! the family at autrain basin

A blind date and after 4 month's we got married that was 28 years ago. I'm very lucky to have her and I don't think we ever had a fight of any sort. I found a good one.

I liked this forum for all the useful info and creative people. This thread makes me fall in love with the forum
Rifraf, Thanks for the AOL memories... paying by the minute, hahah, I remember the huge bills!
Martian's advice was so good, and trollbridge, so nice to give pep talks and support and wisdom.
I love seeing couples who are so compatible and have chemistry. Long lasting couples or new couples where you can tell they'll stay together. I admit, I also get sad because I too wonder if I could ever come close to it.
I find relationships online, being a woman. Some have been good, but I will probably not find someone to be a real partner like described, the kind where you know you could never be apart. In my case, it's my own problems and personal complications holding me back. As well as finding them online is not the best way for me. I had some bad experiences. Most women online do.
Marlin, I think your biggest problem is being too nice. Nice guys attract the users. They can tell very fast who is the nice guy to get favors from. While they prefer to date the bad boys. They couldn't be with the nice guy long term. Not all women are like that but most women want some challenge and mystery. The can't help but want a guy who is not too nice, in case he had to fight for them physically. A guy who can lead (make decisions) and provide for family. If you are not able and willing to have children, or pair with a woman who has them already, that might lower your chances, sad to say.

I don't know how I missed this thread last year. I have so enjoyed reading all of the stories. First of all, 97Marlin, do not give up hope! We are attending a destination wedding of a friend this summer who is 41 and just met the love of his life. They are a perfect match! Second, if a woman tells you that she likes you "as a friend," move on. There's rarely a future there and if there is, she'll be more likely to realize it if you're not sitting around waiting for her. I know plenty of couples who met online- dating sites or otherwise. But I also agree that it's a good idea to join activities where you increase your chances of crossing paths with someone with whom you hit it off. Trollbridge gave a great description of "chemistry" and I do think it's a crucial component of any relationship. You know it when you have it.
As for my story, hubby and I met in high school on a camping trip (different schools, but in the same town and we had mutual friends.) We didn't get together then though, as I had a boyfriend at the time. I went away to college and then broke up with said boyfriend and was single when I returned to my home town. Saw hubby-to-be at a party and invited him home with me. He accepted my invitation but then spent most of the evening hanging out with my (male) roommate, who was a friend of his. I gave him a ride home and he asked for my phone number...but then didn't call. After a number of days, I asked a mutual friend to invite him over- whereupon I used my feminine charms and he finally got the message. We've been together for 20 years this summer, and married for 12- 3 kids together. And it just keeps getting better.

After all these years, my dear man knows, after our daughter getting clean, a cabin has been my dream since my early 20s (now 54). He has just done taxes and wants to give me our return to get started. Trouble is.... he hasn't told me how much. This is my dream not his but here he is trying to make my dream come true..... If course, I have helped him with his for the last 24+years: season tickets to the UT football games. Still don't understand that but there I sit every Saturday during the fall with app. 104,000 people wearing orange.

Erin's Mom, it's like church. You don't need to understand all of it, just sit and soak up the glory.
The Mrs. and I met in grade school. As girls were totally repugnant to me at that point, I don't think I ever noticed much about her, but she and my sister hung out forever.
We started dating in High School, we broke up when I went to college, then when she went to college, then when I came out west, (we got back together each time) The last time, I found somebody that I wanted to have a fling with. I tried break up. She told me "absolutely not". I said, "you don't have a choice". I was wrong, and have been listening to her for 5 years now. Never heard of anybody being told "No" when they were breaking up. But she's a special lady in a lot of ways.

ErinsMom--whatever you do, don't take advantage of this gentleman. I have been in his shoes many a time and, in the end, I end up being taken advantage of.
Okay, I have been gone awhile, because yesterday I went over to my "friend"'s place and painted her closet so she can get her place on the market and today I looked at a place with her and gave my honest opinion. (It is GORGEOUS--I couldn't help thinking it would be a great place for US, even though it is fairly obvious she sees us only as friends).
Please wish me luck tomorrow evening. I had given up on the on-line dating thing, pretty much, although it is sort of like the lottery, except you have better odds with the lottery. Basically, you keep on searching for that special someone and, despite 10-million-to-one odds, you keep on gambling. The only difference is that, with the lottery, you can invest as little as $1, whereas if you take a girl out, if you are off the hook at under $25, you are doing well.
In any event, I e-mailed a female colleague, whom I e-mail back and forth every now and again, about, despite having huge student loans (vets generally have MASSIVE student loans based on income after graduation, so remember this the next time you visit your friendly vet) how lucky she was because she has a nice husband. Well, she has a colleague who is a vet, and we have talked 45 minutes this evening and last, and she is SINCERE and GENUINE and I heard she really wants to meet someone, as she is tired of being alone all the time (as am I). So, I am hopeful! My colleague who hooked us up--she told me she is excited and nervous, as am I, but she sounds really cool. I hope it goes well!

Hey Marlin....you getting nervous???? LOL! It's 4:00 on the east coast...not much longer to wait!!! Just teasing!
I really, really hope your date goes well tonight. You know what----I bet ya anything it will go really well and then Angela is going to suddenly become more interested in you...that's the way it always seems to go! LOL!
Seto...have you ever tried online dating? It worked for my daughter and a good friend of mine...if you haven't it may be worth the try-there are a lot of free dating sites out there as well as pay by the month.
Quoting: Montanan whereupon I used my feminine charms and he finally got the message. Works every time huh!!!! Too funny for sure!
Aqua...I agree a little challenge and mystery is always fun for some women but I find it way more exciting when the man is coming around like a big ol Tom Cat and you're the one in charge of providing some mystery and challenge. That way you have more control until you decide where you want the relationship to go. and lastly....
ErinsMom.....Yippee!!!! Take the offering and build your cabin.....your husband loves you dearly and he wants to see your dreams come true! I know it is hard to take the money for yourself...most mom's have trouble with this....I know, I struggle with this all the time! There always seems to be a more important need for the money but ultimately you will be a better wife and mother if you have your dreams fulfilled. And it doesn't matter that your daughter is an adult...you're still her mom and always will be!

Being alone for so long...well, I think I fall for someone else really easily! We talked today and we seemed to enjoy hearing what each of us had to say. The fact that she is 5 inches taller than I and 10 yrs 3 mos and 29 days my junior doesn't really seem to matter. I can't wait to see her later this week!

I still say internet dating can work out and remains a good option but of course you have to be careful...I'm sure there are many creeps out there who don't have the best intentions. Like I said it has worked out for one of my daughters and a very good divorced girlfriend of mine-though I did have to cringe at many of the things she shared with me and felt that she was very naive much of the time. Aqua...it would be interesting to hear about some of your experiences with online dating, feel like providing any insight?
So Marlin when is your second date with this lovely lady you are thinking about??? Have you made any plans so far?
