Going to stay in a motel this weekend. Does leaving a cell phone hidden in the car, turned on, have some sort of tracking in case the car is stolen? Anything like location, bluetooth etc. need to be on?

If it's an Iphone, "Find My" application will do it for you. My wife and I keep track of each other. We can see each other on a map, and even watch our movements for the sake of safety etc. We both run and bike long miles on our own. It gives us piece of mind.

Any Android I have had comes with an app called "find device". You can use that feature from a webpage on a laptop too.

Thanks guys. I took the old Vette on a road trip to the coast, was a little worried at the hotel but our room ended up looking right at it. I did turn on 'emergency location services', whatever that does, on my wife's phone and stuck it in the trunk. If nothing else it kept her off the phone for awhile. 20211016_114951.jpg

Nice car.
Android Emergency Location Service (ELS) is a supplemental service that sends enhanced location directly from Android handsets to emergency services when an emergency call is placed. Today, ELS works on over 99% of active Android devices (running Android OS version 4.1 /Jelly Bean and above

Thanks. Yeah I saw that but not sure a theft constitutes an emergency call. Sure would have for me!

With ELS turned on when that phone calls an emergency number like 911, that phone sends more accurate (GPS) location info to the emergency services operator's system. With ELS turned off emergency services only gets what information the cell tower the phone is connected to has, which mainly only gives a vector.
If people with an Android phone use a Google account (Gmail) that the phone is always signed into plus a few other "musts" (must be on, have a data connection... check with Google for details) then the GPS location of that device can be easily seen from another phone or a computer. Once the system finds the phone the police could use that info to locate the phone and the car if the phone is still in it. You can also lock the phone remotely or erase the contents.
