On Youtube, Homesteading Family did a great video on canning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVYZP1D6wHo

The brand of pressure canner she recommends is from All American.

http://www.allamericancanner.com/All-American-Pressure-Canners.htm

The best book (I've heard) on canning is Balls Book of Canning.

https://www.amazon.ca/All-Ball-Book-Canning-Preserving/dp/0848746783

Lehman's has canning supplies (if you want ti support an off0grid type of business) but there are lots of others.

https://www.lehmans.com/category/canning#

There is also a free 4 part course on safely canning food on their website.

To protect your roof from damage from ice and snow.

https://disastersafety.org/winter-weather/prevent-roof-damage-from-heavy-snow-and-ice /

As little as 1 inch of ice could cause your roof to fail.

I found this Youtube channel the other day. it offers some great advice on setting up a homestead on raw land.

https://www.youtube.com/user/VergePermaculture

The really interesting thing about their approach is they have a free contour mapping app so you can figure out the lay of your land and then upload it into Google Earth Pro and start designing your homestead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d-DXyz-ypI&list=PLsszit8mIl_URJZjBGp4gmCamwpXlK9v-&i ndex=94

https://contourmapgenerator.com/#2/37.9/-44.6

This video has a discussion with a lady who used the app to design her homestead on raw land in Saskatchewan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEcR9V7uX-k

There's also a free webinar on how to use their app.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS2xPzhUWuU&list=PLsszit8mIl_URJZjBGp4gmCamwpXlK9v-&i ndex=92

Most people are so overwhelmed with the process of building a homestead that they frequently overlook something and by the time they discover their mistake it's way too late to fix it (and far too expensive).

What I found really interesting about these videos is that they help YOU evaluate and then design the infrastructure of your land on a computer and then offer practical advice throughout each step (roadwork, water, cabin location, etc) all before you ever put a shovel into the ground.

Boy, there's a lot of info on homesteading, greenhouses, permaculture and developing raw land on this Youtube channel.

https://www.youtube.com/c/VergePermaculture/videos

They also have their own website with a lot of free articles and courses.

One video on the Verge Permaculture Youtube channel was about having a cold room and the challenges of storing food in 5 gallon buckets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz8Di_BQUhI

The product she recommends is called Gamma Seal Lids, which transforms a standard bucket into an easily re-sealable food storage bucket.

I would think that this lid would be much better at keeping out pests than the lid that normally comes with the bucket.

Another great video on the Verge Permaculture Youtube channel concerns Bison Hand Pumps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aWzaOI1GcQ

https://www.bisonpumps.com/

This is a great back-up hand pump that can fit inside your existing well (along side your electric pump) and be there ready to use in case of an emergency.

Another video topic from Verge Permaculture is on how to design and build a passive greenhouse which would require no electricity or added heat sources like propane or a wood fired stove.

Overview of the passive Solar Greenhouse Design App.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hckLApyAbDw

Choosing the shape of the greenhouse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRRT3NHnY60

Choosing the Glazing.

https://www.y2mate.com/youtube/E8jZ_le9-c4

irrigation in your greenhouse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdVwa8V_fNg

The importance of a kneewall in greenhouse design.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Guo40xb3Em4

Vent design (with an amazing wax cylinder)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elK-8qlr0NU

This is one possible solar vent hinge you could use (there are other brands). The piston cylinder is filled with wax which expands or contracts depending on the interior temperature of the greenhouse so it will automatically open the greenhouse vents when the interior gets too hot. You will never have to come out and manually adjust the vent panels again.

https://solarventworks.com/gigavent_installation.htm

These cover some of the basics but there are lots of other videos on passive greenhouse design, construction, usage on their Youtube channel as well.

Hey Rockie.
Do a link for ACOPOWER LiON cooler fridge/freezer.
Hobotech on you tube does a good test drive on it. Long video of course, but the cooler is pretty impressive actually. Not cheap. But might be an alternative for people on the go or for those who use their cabins part time.

A great site with lots of info on off grid homesteading and practical advice on choosing motors and pumps that use very little energy.

http://solarhomestead.com/best-off-grid-well-pumps/

The Grundfos SQFlex uses a soft start system so there isn't a huge energy spike when it first starts up.

https://ca.grundfos.com/products/find-product/sqflex1.html

Of course, once the water is out of the well it has to be sent somewhere, so the type and number of circulation pumps you need will have a huge impact on the size of your off grid PV system.

http://solarhomestead.com/off-grid-circulating-pumps/

Look for Ivan Labs - El Sid circulation pumps.

This video, from 30x40 Architects, discusses the Library of Congress archives of historical building.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck

Over 581,000 pictures in the archive showcase over 43000 famous buildings throughout the US and also includes measured construction drawings for many of them.

You can also look up "generic searches", such as barns, railroad stations, churches, public buildings, etc.

If you have an interest in historical buildings this site is a great resource.

This video from 30x40 Architects features a discussion between an architect and his structural engineer on how best to design the pier foundation for a rural cabin.

Lots of info on what to consider (anchoring, wind load, etc), and especially focused on cross brace sizing and attachment methods.

How to use a compost thermometer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdIIO_CH-kY

Who knew? I didn't. I never even considered that a compost thermometer existed, but when you see the explanation and demonstration you think OK, maybe I should get one.

As the video notes mention: A good compost pile cooks at 50 - 65 degrees C. too cold and it does not cook, too hot and it lights on fire and loses its nitrogen and phosphorus.

If you get trapped at the cabin for a while (ice storm, road washes out, etc) you should have some freeze dried meals ready to go.

Happy Yak has rated right at the top for taste and convenience.

I've been thinking of getting a food sealer. From several different sites the Geryon E2900-MS has been the top rated food sealer.
