Usually the best thing to do before applying siding to your building is to include a drainage plane between the siding and the sheathing. This small air gap (usually 3/8 to 3/4") allows air to circulate behind the siding and keep water from soaking into the sheathing.
Traditionally people use strips of wood (1x4) attached vertically to the sheathing to create the airspace but what if you want to install vertical siding? The furring strips would then be running horizontally behind the siding, and each strip prevents water from running down the wall and draining out the bottom.
This product has a corrugated profile, so if it is attached horizontally the water can drain past it. If you install it vertically air can also move more easily across the entire wall.
