In reading through articles about indoor heating and ventilation on the Green Building Advisor website a lot of the discussion is about the kinds of pressurization problems that can occur in houses.
Many people run a bath fan but close the bathroom door, causing a lack of proper airflow into the room which results in the fan not working properly.
Other times people heat their cabin with a wood stove but the bedrooms at the other end of the building stay cold. One of the ways to eliminate pressurization problems is to install a door vent so that air can easily return to the main space. The vent also helps with humidity and stuffiness in the room.
And yes, you can always just leave the door open but some people prefer it closed, especially at night or if there are guests.
