I was reading a Fine Homebuilding article on Resilient Design (Building Houses to withstand severe weather) and the author mentioned in the "Power, Heat and Water on Hand" section that if you are heating your home with a pellet stove you should have one that has DC fans that will operate off a battery in case the electric grid goes down.

Lots of people don't know that most pellet stoves, while cleaner burning that a wood stove, won't work if there is no electricity. The article mentions one model that will work off of a battery bank, the Quada Fire Mt. Vernon AE model.

I believe that there is also some gravity fed pellet stoves that don't need any electricity. Not sure how well they work.

I think most designs require you to power both the auger to move the pellets and the air fan with electricity. DC fans are more efficient. But any small inverter will run that fan off a battery.

The gravity fed stove is a bit expensive but its a neat design and looks real pretty.
