I saw this featured on a TV show called "Cityline" (Canadian Home and Garden type show) and they were talking about a new type of small hydroponic system that uses LED lights instead of the regular energy hog "greenhouse type" bulbs.

Guessing you could grow some lettuce but not enough power for plants that produce anything substantial. Pretty cool as a novelty. They definitely have some higher powered LED stuff out there though.

I don't know why you could grow more "substantial" plants (like tomatoes) since their light is still a full spectrum greenhouse light.
here is some more info on youtube.

I think full spectrum is just referring to the wavelength of light. I dont really know too much about the subject but I don't think the amount of power that light is putting out would net you more than herbs and lettuce. Which is still pretty sweet. I checked the videos they did not show any larger plants being grown. In fact I think he re iterated larger plant such as tomatoes require the halide style lights. Im guessing they would be great for starter stuff before popping them outside.

They do have a product that uses a felt soil pot for larger plants too. I think the great thing about these kinds of systems is that fresh food could be grown all year long. if you live at your cabin year round what better way to get fresh greens than to harvest them right from your own garden in January rather than having to drive into town to get something that's been shipped in from Mexico or beyond. Or I guess you could just open a can.
