One article I was reading about building kitchen cabinet bases included the recommendation that you should eliminate the toe kick from the plywood sides. This decreases the standard cabinet-side height from 34 1/2' to 31" allowing you to get 6 cabinet sides from a single sheet of plywood rather than the normal 4.

The missing toe kick part for the entire run of cabinets can then be built out of a 2x4 "ladder" that can also be leveled right on the floor all at once and then you just place your cabinet boxes on top of it and use a finishing trim board for the front of the toe kick. If you have an end cabinet showing you can still include the toe kick height in the end panel though.

Anyone else have tricks to save on materials?

I think there are lots of design ideas one can use to save materials. For example, trim boards around doors and walls can be made of a 1x4 ripsawn in half if the width of the trim is 1-5/8" instead of 1-3/4" or 2." We designed our cabin to be 20x24 feet, which fits nicely with plywood floor dimensions of 4x8 sheets.
