I made one similar a number of years ago but instead of a propane burner I bought a small portable charcoal bbq for $15 and used a small amount of charcoal in it. I set a tray of smoking chips above the charcoal on the grill and it worked great. For my cooking racks I used perforated steel. I used it for a number of years with excellent results but was given an actual propane smoker as a gift so I got rid of the homemade one.
