Too many times the tub or shower stall is put in before the exterior wall insulation and vapor barrier making it difficult to install either one after the fact. Sometimes the insulation and vapor barrier have been installed before the tub or shower but they wind up sitting against the studs (no drywall). There is nothing enclosing the exterior wall BELOW the tub rim or behind the shower stall wall.
What you should do is fully insulate the stud cavity, put up and seal the vapor barrier and then cover the stud bays with waterproof board (cement board or something like Denshield) and THEN install the shower or tub against the exterior wall. You will probably have to add a piece of 2x4 to the surface of the exterior wall to properly support the tub flange.
