Here are some communication devices recommended in a prepping survival book for staying informed during an emergency or disaster.

A broadband radio such as:

https://www.amazon.ca/Eton-Satellite-FM-Stereo-Shortwave-Aircraft/dp/B0014T7W8Y

A wind up radio with short wave:

An emergency scanner and NOAA (Weather) radio:

https://www.uniden.com/scanner/id-BC75XLT/BC75XLT_300-Channel_Handheld_Scanner

OR:

https://www.uniden.com/scanner/id-HOMEPATROL-2/HOMEPATROL-II_Simple_Program_Scanner

You can get info on your area at:

http://www.policescanners.net/

Click on the link "Find a Scanner for your Area" and it will tell you whether the local services use analog or digital scanners and which brand of scanner will work and how to use them.

I have it all covered. Ham radio! 100 watt HF rig talks worldwide.

I bring my bug out box which contains my power supply, Yaesu FT857D, LDG auto tuner made just for that radio (YT-100) and a G5RV-LITE from Radiowaves antenna that works on 6-80 meters plus my Diawa fwd/ref power meter.

Toyota, in an article on EMP pulses I read that people should have antenna protectors for their communications equipment.
They recommend a company called "Polyphaser".

Quote: "For anyone with two-way radio equipment or radio receivers that are already extremely well-shielded and also well isolated from the power line, but left with the vulnerability of a connection to an external antenna, EMP protection devices can be obtained that are made by Polyphaser. The Polyphaser EMP protection devices for antenna connections generally use only type N connectors (so you may need an adapter), and the cost is generally about $125. Polyphaser does not sell these devices directly to the customer in small quantities, but they can be purchased through some specialty electronics retailers if you know exactly what model number of Polyphaser device that you want".

You can get it in either type N or UHF (PL259). We use these on our repeater antennas. I am one of the board members of a local repeater group, we just replaced these. They have a shelf life too, after so many years, they need to be replaced. They are dated too.

In terms of emergency communication, the new Garmin Rino is quite impressive.
The Garmin Rino 755T is GPS/GLONASS with a 5-Watt FRS/GMRS two-way radio.
It has weather active tracking system with built-in NOAA radio.
