"No matter what your choice of materials, never rely on face sealing alone for windows. Make a pan so any future window leaks will drain to the outside and not get into your structure."
Typically a penetration like a window or door also receives a head flashing over the top that tucks under the weather resistive barrier, the housewrap, and lips out over the top of the window. Any water that gets behind the siding is redirected out or down the drainage plane. There is no way to tuck a flashing under the weather resistive layer with this method, the best you can do is tape it to the wall and hope the stickum holds tight longer than any stickum I have ever seen. He missed half of the window detailing.
Yup taping is easy, anyone can do it. Notice the pucker in the pic, this tape is not firmly bedded, my bet is it will become a nice gutter over time. Very easy to do, it takes some special care to firmly bed the tape. The sheathing needs to be clean and dry to get a good bond. In a weather barrier this would be called an underlap, well actually the zip concept is an underlap trying to say it is something other.
