Here's a great tool to calculate how much of an overhang to build on your façades.

The black bar above the window is the overhang, the grey area is the shadow cast. Set the window's width and height in the green area, then slide the black cursers around in the yellow section to set the various dimensions for the overhang.
Slide the upper black curser in the blue area to see how the shadow changes from the summer to winter solstice (it's set for the 21st of each month at noon, but you can change the date too with the lower black curser in the blue area, and the time of day using the clock). You can even change the direction that the window faces with the compass, and the latitude can be changed using the curser on the globe.
