I am looking to build a basic lofted 12 by 16 cabin in NY, and for the permit process I need to submit plans. Any references on a site that has free or inexpensive cabin plans for something like this? Anyone have plans they could email me? Thanks!

You could use this one http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/aben-plans/6013.pdf ..just go to a kinkos or someplace like that and blow it up some, take whiteout and change the dimensions to 12 x 16 ...should work for just cabin plans..

Here's a site with plans
http://www.townandcountryplans.com/
But just google cabin plans or small building plans and you'll come up with a lot of stuff.
The designers of such plans cannot design for all code requirements since there are a lot of variations, so they usually tell you that 'permits and permit requirements are the sole responsibility of the owner' blah blah. So anyway you will need to find out what the particular requirements are in your area. Once you get a set of plans, I'd suggest taking it in to the building/planning department and ask what all they want. Hopefully they won't brush you off with 'get a qualified engineer' but they very well may. You should be able to permit it using rules of light frame construction rather than paying to get an engineer. But, you have to know what you are doing with the rules of light frame and your plan design must be conducive to their use.
Good luck.
