I use silver windshield reflectors in my cabin windows to keep the cabin from getting too hot in summer while I am away.

For fire starting a little squirt of alcohol based hand cleaner works great.

hit an ax into the end of a 6' log with straight grained wood (splits easy), use a wooden mallet to drive the axe in and then fit wedges into it. keep working wedges until the log splits in two. turn them so the flatter sides are on the dirt and chop V or U shaped notches into the ends. set two unsplit piece of firewood (about 18" wide) on the ground and put the split log accross them so it rests on the two pieces andd is well off the ground. a 10' log will provide for two 6' benches that you can put around the fire ring. great for company

I like to do two things at my cabin in Republic Wa. that I think work well. Since I don't have power I use inexpensive AA powered motion activated LED lighst from Costco at the front door, back door and in the outhouse. That way when I'm either there or just coming in for the weekend I don't have to go grabbing a headlamp straight away. Plus when I'm there by myself it lets me know when something is around either human or animal. Another thing I have is a game camera hidden in the woods. It monitors both the wildlife and anyone who might come uninvited when I'm away.

I might also add that Coyote pee purchased from a trapping store works great to drive the pack rats away. (soaked into wooden blocks) I also use dryer sheets as well as 100 percent peppermint oil to help drive away vermin. Works like a champ.
