I find it amazing that a chainsaw chain, if set down for 1 microsecond, will be knotted when picked up. So this morning after getting mine back into a usable loop, I vowed to understand the wonders behind this phenomena. The first video I looked at explained the untangling procedure simply and quickly. I had the classic 'over and under knots', once that is rectified the rest is child's play.

It is easier to sort out when one has a flat clean surface to lay the chain out. I never seem to be close to such a surface when a chain needs changing out in the forest.

I usually get it sorted eventually, but my wife... who crochets and deals with tangles all the time can do it quicker than I can! If we are out cutting wood and I need to change a chain, I'm usually mumbling some unmentionable words under my breath and she comes over and in seconds hands me the untangled chain to put on.

I have seen some interesting tangles over my lifetime.
