You can dump summer heat out the peaks of the roof if you put in some windows or vents. With windows open downstairs it with create the natural convection flow.

You want something that can maintain an air space behind the siding to ensure that it is able to dry. This can be done with furring strips, or arguably, with "bumpy" housewraps.
Googling "rain screen" or "drainable housewrap" will give you some results that show what I'm referring to. This is important on any "reservoir cladding," as in a siding that can hold moisture. (ie: not vinyl, but wood, cement board, brick, etc)
Not sure how arid your climate is, you may get away with what you have there depending on what your wetting events are like.

Just wanted to post a little update. Still working on this thing - two years and counting. Been working on the interior, using the same fence boards I'm using for the outside siding. I like the look so far.
