Winter is creeping up on us here in the southern Colorado Rockies. We are at 9,500' with a southern exposure, the picture is of Cornwall Nose at 11,650'... but the snow is down to 10,000' on this northern face. Snowing off and on yesterday but only skiffs of snow that melted soon after coating the ground. Clear this morning, 22F and heavy frost. Supposed to snow again tonight and tomorrow morning but clearing up again for at least a few more days.

We are watching the forecasts and starting to pack up and load the RV with nonessential/not needed items so we can get out ahead of the first "real" winter storm. Last bit of dead fall wood to split and stack today. Thought I was done with making wood for the year but our last bit of clean up turned up a few more solid logs. Still have about a dozen dead Aspen storing next years firewood vertically.... might be a couple of those on the ground by next spring, depending on snow and wind.

Huge slash pile to be burned this winter... not in place, we have 2 burn piles started that I still need to get plastic over so they will be easier to light in the snow. The big pile in the picture is between our 2 burn piles. We will drag wood each way. Just too much to make one big burn pile.... too big and insufficient clearing combined. More work but safer.

Edit... photos sideways...try again!

We love it.... the continental divide is about 10-15 minutes drive from the cabin. Lots of wilderness and alpine lakes nearby... most you have to hike/backpack into, trails galore in the South San Juan wilderness. We spent so much time working around the cabin this summer we hardly got out... our first year here. There was so much firewise work, general upkeep and personalizing that needed done, not to mention installing the solar.

Next year we hope is different! Most years we get in 750-800 trail miles with usually half or more than half being backcountry packing. This year, less than 350 miles altogether. We will put on another hundred or so before the end of the year.

Our primary home is in the mountains of Arizona at 5000' so forested and actually a pretty nice place to live.... winters! Summers commonly hit the 90's by the end of May and stays there more or less until the end of September. That's why we bought the cabin in Colorado! A 20 minute drive down the hill toward Phoenix though puts us in hiking country all winter.

We had light snow all day yesterday. The lake behind our cabin has ice on it that is almost, but not quite, thick enough to walk on. It is winter up here.
