Anyone have success with these?

I had made many of these for Barred owls, wood ducks and mergansers after the property across the road from me was slaughter buy clear cutting(appox1000 acres or more). It could take up to 2-3 years before owls will use them, wood ducks take to them right away as they are more visible along the shoreline...I had better success with the owls boxes that were above 25' and in old growth forest. I tried to find out how far apart the owl boxes should be but I couldn't find any info, so I kept them approx. 5 acres apart. Out of 10 boxes 3 were occupied in the first year 2 more the next and 0 this year...The branch on the box is very helpful and when you mount the box try to place it amongst other branches...and close to a water source if possible. Best of luck....

Thank you for the advice, and sorry to hear of the devastation of the property near you.

Wont be a problem mounting near water, as we have lots. I also read you should mount them on the edge of a meadow or field... so that the Owls can see field mice from their nest. I have a few of these on my property, and will mount near them.

Do you have any info on if the houses should face South or any other direction? Does it matter?

Thanks again... Rich

I think I did read something about mounting direction but can't remember. I just look at it like a natural setting as I believe the owls will move into any hole/crevice no matter which way its facing. They also will use abandoned crow nests which I didn't know until this year, I also seen them nesting at the top of a broken off tree 30'up,there was only enough room for one parent to land...As far as being on the edge of a field, I'm not sure. I know that I will see barred owls in trees around my property which is very open/about 50yards around the house, especially just as it starts to get dark. They like catching frogs along a creek that runs into a lake on my property. I had no idea they ate frogs...Best of luck...
