Hi everyone. I found a property in the western mountains of maine this past winter and I bought it. The previous owner cleared the cabin site, installed the septic system, the driveway, and the foundation. He was selling due to a divorce and I believe I found a good deal.
When my father was alive we would camp and fish this area often. I have always been looking for land here so this has a special meaning for me.
The original owner planned a 16x32 cabin. This isn't large enough for my intended uses. I have an 8 year old daughter, a large family, and more kids to come so I need more room.
I am going to add on an 8x16 great room which allow a good place for us all to gather. By having this space Ive been able to use the original footprint for bedrooms and other core functions

When i closed on the land it looked like this:
There was between 4 and 5 feet of snow on the ground. I couldn't wait. I ended up framing the walls up at home:
It took me about 3 weeks to build all the walls. I would work after dinner for a few hours each night and in weekends.

When I hit the middle of April i ended up hiring a local to clear the driveway out so I could get to the property.
I shoveled for 2 straight days to clear the platform.
Then I was ready to stand my walls. I took them up in 2 loads due to weight.

After stabding the walls, some snow shoeing.
Fast forward a month and here we are.
Once the main structures gets rafters and sheathing I will begin the addition. I had a friend join me for 2 days otherwise I've done it all on my own.
I had a someone ready to do the addition foundation (3 sonotunes) but they backed out. I ended up buying a cement mixer and will self perform that work as well.

With that much square footage and a septic system - I'm thinking you should start calling it a cottage!

Wow, nice what's the floor plan. Are you working off a blue print or just as you go. I been wanting to build a 16x32 with loft and open ceiling. Thanks

Thanks everyone. I sketched up a few floor plans on paper before deciding on a direction. I wanted open space. The foundation being only on one end of the building forced me to place the bathroom and kitchen on one end. Everyone who has visited seems to really like the layout so far- I really love it!
I placed the ridge beam yesterday. It is (2) lvl beams lagged together, 14" x 1.75 each. With the help of my future (fingers crossed) father in law I placed some rafters today. I will post some photos next. Hoping to be weather tight by the end of July (6 weeks +/-).
Next weekend is sonotube installation for the bump out and the porches on each end.

I had been stressing out about this ridge beam since I started this project. I was lucky. The lumber yard delivered the beam with a boom truck. The truck barely made it in. The driver was amazing and placed it perfectly.

Today's progress.
Roof sheathing next. Anyone have issues leaving 5/8" cdx uncovered for awhile?

Also....... as you may see in the first photo of the last post, there's provisions for 2 skylights. I picked these out and their cost is roughly $1500! I don't have the money to buy these now. I am going to pay for the metal roof to be installed. Should I find the money to get them now before the roofer comes in?
