Well next week I'm scheduled for triple by pass
Surgery. I won't be able to do the build i pictured
Myself. So i just signed the contract to have a company
Out of Houston TX to build a cabin for me.
The building will be 20x26 with a 6x20 porch.

The build is guaranteed to be completed by April 20th.
So as soon as it's complete I will post actual pictures.
Until then this pic is similar to what they are building

The biggest change I made to this was I upgraded to Hardie plank siding. Larger windows and upgraded the shingles

I think you should really increase the size of your porch columns (even if you don't need to).

A really great book I read recently was called "Get Your House Right". It is mostly geared towards classical styles of houses and demonstrates what the proper proportions of various building parts should be (Dormers, windows, columns, etc) but it has a lot of good advice.

One thing they mentioned was that most porch columns tend to look like "sticks" holding up the roof (especially at a distance). They said that you should take whatever size is required structurally and then double it .

I would probably go to an 8x8 for the porch columns so that they look for substantial.

My dad had quintuple bypass 20 years ago and we were all very worried. But it went smoothly because they have this kind of thing down pat now and almost do it in their sleep. It's like a radiator change out. He's been fine since.

I like the stick appearance of porch posts on small simple buildings. Reminds me of the 'oooooolllllllllleeee West, where we tie our hosses to the framework 'fore we set a spell and tell lies about being Rangers.

One thing I think looks ostentatious is huge fancy columns holding up a dinky roof. In this case, what would look best would an unsawn timber for the posts, straight or not so straight pieces of mesquite well fitted by a carpenter who knows what he's doing (like a true Ranger). Most them 'carpenters' these days don't know what to do with a piece of wood ain't got a grade stamp on it. Shame.

Anyways that porch looks like a fine place to set and produce lots of gas while you recoop. Now don't get fresh with the nurses at the hospital, it just ain't politic to do so these days. Now, back when I was a Ranger....

old_fart after reading rockies & bldginsp post I agreed with both their statements.Rockies says the post look small and should be bigger, bldginsp says you dont want the post to big on a small structure, they both make a good point. Here is my 2 cents worth, have your builder use the same size material but make the knee braces about a foot longer it will give the porch a bigger and fuller appearance without changing the design to much. The braces on their now are to short and tucked to tight to the roof line thus giving it tiny stick appearance. It is a nice looking building and I think this little inexpensive upgrade will do the trick.Good Luck on your surgery I will keep you in my prayers

I still think the posts are too small. Go 6x6 at a minimum and also increase the length of the braces (6x6 as well)

Quoting: rockies
8x8 for the porch columns

For what load???
I think the 4x4's are fine.

My concern, looking at the picture, is the concrete blocks sinking into the ground, tilting the structure.
Is the builder going deeper to solid ground or just the blocks on turf?

I'm not talking about "load" I'm talking about proportions. 4x4 posts may be fine for the load but they look like thin little sticks (especially at a distance).
