Well I was going to wait for more progress to post more pictures but with all the rain I was once again stuck at home on the weekend and unable to head to the deer lease. I was hoping to have the floor down, walls up and rafters in place this past long weekend but it didn't happen. The buildings are 10' x 20' and will be a 3 piece modular build so it can be moved in the future, if needed. 2 sleeping area and one bath/kitchen/ living. There will be no stove only a fridge & microwave, we have a grill outside. This is being built near the hill country in Texas and the soil is very rocky, like good luck driving fence post rocky. The deck blocks are set on 16" x 16" x 4" foundation blocks that the soil was removed the leveled with sand. Frame work is 2x6 16" centers with 4x4 runs under them. This section will have a single slop roof from front to back but the side additions will have a gable roof so eventually we can do a covered deck in front. The floor will be 3/4" tongue and grove, glued and screwed. hopefully I can get out there in a few weeks if it ever stops raining!!!!

So it will be strictly a hunting shack? This is a lease so is that why you are building so it can be moved? How much land do you have and what is the targeted game you want to hunt? Nice looking spot.

Yea pretty much just a hunting shack, my monthly get away. It is a lease so that is why it can be moved. Plus with only being 10' wide it's an easy over size permit to move. I also kept the height in mind when it's on a trailer to be under legal limit also. It about 800 acre lease with deer, turkey and of course hogs.

Hill County I believe is a prime hunting area. Sounds like a great venture and keep us posted.

Thanks

I'm northwest of your location and, boy, do I hear you on all of the rain. (Heh, I'm actually hearing the rain as I type this.) My projects have been delayed a lot. Fingers crossed, looks like we may have some sunny days beginning Sunday.

Sounds like a well thought-out "shack!" I look forward to seeing your progress and hope you can make some soon!

Oh I forgot to mention the site has water and electricity so it's not completely off grid. I'm planning on a LP instant hot water heater for the shower and sink, and a heater. Still looking for a heater that is small enough and a direct vent. A/C will most likely be a portable unit or window shaker. I may do a small forced air electric heater in the bathroom

Well the weather gods and the work gods finally smiled on me after not being able to head to my lease for 13 weeks. It's getting hot in Texas now that the flooding has stopped, for now. Took a buddy of mine with to help and we got a lot done in one day. The base framing was still in great shape, I figured the wonderful pressure treated wood would have twisted like a pretzel but only had one outside board that had crowned 1 1/2" in 10 feet. That's not to bad is it?? I mean it will eventually go straight, right? WRONGE! cut it out and replace. Laid down 3/4" TG plywood, liquid nail and screws. Screws every 6" on the edge and 12" in the field. I hate squeaks. Then moved on to framing. Things went super smooth till we ran out of lumber, forgot to bring up extra for cross bracing, opps. Hopefully the weather gods will continue to smile and not scorch us next weekend. The plan is to get the top plates finished up, tie the walls into eachother, blocking added in the walls, roof trusses built and metal roof on. it will be a single slop roof so things should go quick.

Well two weekends in a row, must be doing something right. This past weekend while everyone was celebrating I was trying to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion. 100+ temps are no fun to be working in. They said it was 103 on Sunday and 106 on Monday in town. With a little help from my buddy and his 12 y/o son we got the roof framed, tin installed and house wrap put on. I would highly recommend not installing 9' wide roll of house wrap on a 20' wall at night with 20+ mph winds. We worked early morning till the sun made up retreat to the camper then wait till the sun went down to work under portable lights till about midnight, but we made more progress. Hopefully the house wrap will still be on when I get back in 3 to 4 weeks.

Just a small update. Finally about to make it back out and get another day of construction in. Along with fixing feeders, moving feeders and cameras, opening trails back up, getting wasps out of the shack and a blind, trimming back shooting lanes and then working on siding. Not bad for about 8 hours of work. Next I need to buy a paint sprayer and paint it before I install door, windows and trim. I hate painting.

Finally able to get a day out at the lease. All I have to say is a good quality paint sprayer is WONDERFUL!!! Saturday morning put the fascia and soffit up. Ended up using hardy plank cause they didn't have any LP product soffit in stock and that was a mistake. I forgot what a pain that thin hardy board was to work with, brittle, easy to crack and break and don't miss shoot a nail cause you will have a hole for sure. But it's up. Took about 2 hours to double coat the building with a paint sprayer. went and worked on deer feeders while it dried then came back to install door and windows. I precut and painted the trim at home. Well I messed up two pieces but not to bad. Now back to reality to recut the messed up trim, cut the remaining trim and paint it. Heading back out next weekend for opening weekend and to finish installing the trim, caulk the trim and touch up trim paint. Then move to the interior, FINALLY!!!

oh and on a side note, when it's dark and your tired while cleaning up. Make sure you check all the boxes you think are empty before throwing them in the fire. My new door has a lock set installed but no keys to lock it up. OPPS!!

Well it's been awhile but the bathroom is framed (need to get pictured) and all the walls are insulated. Trying to hang plywood on the ceiling alone is miserable unless you have one of these great inventions!!!

Plywood on walls, quarter round in vertical corners and 1 1/8" x 1/4" lattice trim over the seams and around the ceiling and wall joint. Now to trim the door and windows and figure out what to put on the floor

KabinKat, unfortunately I haven't been back out to work on the shack since the 4th of July. Between the 100+ temps and work 70 to 80+ hours a week, I've been staying home. The next planned outing to work on the shack probably won't be till September and at that time I will be sanding floors and putting down clear coat on them. maybe the walls too if I get a wild hair. lol

holly cow it's been almost 2 years. I set the blocks and framed the floor beginning of march 2016 and I'm almost done. Will I ever be totally done? Well the main area is complete, show is framed and tin hung for shower surround. Now to finish the plumbing. I would have been done but morning and afternoon hunting got in the way, lol

Did shoot a nice mature small buck. He was 5 years old and healthy. He will put some meat in the freezer. Not the big buck I was looking for but we need to manage and needed meat. Have some cull bucks running around that will hopefully come out next time to fill my freezer. I hung my .243 up this year and am now shooting a .308, I'm letting a friend of mine that is new to hunting shoot my .243 and is dropping hogs down here with it.

Sparky, Nice buck , always nice to see the boys come out, when your , on a watch. I use both 308 and 243, 308 in the bush, 243 in the open. Am making venison jerky , later today, always popular , at our house. We have no hogs in our area yet, probably not something to wish for.Good luck , and enjoy your cabin. old243

You don't want hogs, that's for sure. They make good target practice and some eat ok but you can not knock their numbers down and they tear a lot of stuff up. If you need a second opinion of the quality of your jerky I will be happy to offer my services. lol I will be butchering that deer up this weekend and make some sausage after I get one or two more.
