I'm a hobby farmer. Really love farming. Watching the crops grow is a joy.

Weird thing is I hate to garden. Wife does that. If you have any farming going on, please share.

Foggy Sunrise is a spectacular pic

I should have known you would be from that region SC, it is all starting to make sense...the Shaman of Shenandoah. Nestled right between 2 of my favourite places, the Blue Ridge and the Appalachian - no wonder it is so beautiful where you are.

Great photo's and beautiful farm and land Salty. Good for you and the Mrs.

Do you also keep animals on your "hobby farm" that looks far from just being a hobby

beautiful farm land !!! I will be coming through the Valley in August on my way to Maine camp!! I always love the ride through there!!!

My farming in on my small farm in the deep south is food plots for deer/turkey and I have 1300 acres surrounds my cabin leased for hunting ~~I have lots of food plots on it as well...the largest food plot only about 2 to 3 acres . But I enjoy the bush hogging and lime/fertilizer and seeding in the fall. I enjoy watching it GROW!!!

No upndown here we live in a delta , the highest point is 9 in. above the lowest . WE are below lake level in Ontario meaning we relay on drainage pumps to keep dry. Sugar beets , vegetable crops and mosquitoes abound .

Craig... As you know i also have a place in the Shenandoah valley also... although mine was a farm 70-100 years ago. It's now a young forest.

I'm interested in farming also, but don't want to take down my trees... so I've been reading a book called "Farming in the Woods".

Thought you or others might be interested in it, assuming you have forest on your property too.

Enjoy

Haha cute. BTW, how are you so familiar with my local geography? You a google earth geek? Hehe

Ya mention the mountains by name. Impressive. JMU grad?

The Valley and mountains are lovely indeed. But I'm a water guy. Hence the cabin at the Chesapeake Bay.

Oh, I'm going there this weekend. I will put up a pic or two on my Virginia thread. If I remember. It's so much fun, that it slips my mind to share. I either have a great time or just dream about one and ramble here.

Motorcycle - dirtbike - hiking junkie. I spent decades riding and hiking your area and all the way over to the Smoky's - some of the best years and experiences of my life (cue the music and soundtrack..lol).

Some places and or areas speak to your spirit and soul, and you are powerless over their draw or affect on you - these are definitely those kind of places.

Also some of the best people I have ever met or known come from those places as well.

Not sure about google earth, but definitely a geek

As far as forest farming goes... there are a ton of raspberries this year. I'll likely go out tomorrow and get some.

We also have lots of pawpaws, but they are not yet ripe.

And the mushrooms... cant tell you how many varieties we've had this year since it's been very wet. (although im still chicken to eat um).

The one thing I don't like is that i'm having an algae bloom in one of my creeks. In fact, I've traced it and the bloom goes about 4 miles upstream.

How many acres do you farm Salty? I had a small 30 acre farm and raised alfalfa. Did all the irrigating, cutting and baling. I had a guy do the beets, corn and beans I enjoyed farming.
I also raised garden vegetables and sold at a road side stand. That was a lot of fun and I did well at that. I remember one year I sold over 2 ton of squash.
I sold the place and I miss it a lot. I loved to watch things grow and harvest was so rewarding.

Hence the term "hobby" farm. I farm 21 acres. I have a real job and use the farm as therapy. It's like my cabin.... A break from reality. I actually live on my farm, so it's enjoyed every evening.

I go to the cabin about 30 nights a year. It's 3.5 hours away.

Yep hobby farming is what it is. Lol It was like a good shot of medicine but worked my butt off. I loved every moment and wish I hadn't sold. Now the land I have isn't farm land but I enjoy it as much and a lot less work.

We have a bumper crop so far. I have seen hurricanes lay it flat right before chopping season. Hopefully that won't happen.
