New to the forum.

We purchased some land in late 2009. Our original intention was to buy 2-5 acres with the eventual goal of building our retirement home. In our search for land we decided to compare properties at different price points. We ended up getting 136 acres with waterfalls, 2000 feet of frontage on the mill pond, open fields, meadows and a hardwood forest.

The property came with a 11 X 21 tool shed. This has now been converted over to a 3 season cabin. We have put in new windows, doors and floor. The internal framing was also upgraded. As the Mrs. was not to thrilled about the outhouse we had an * X 10 garden shed built which now houses a composting toilet. Both buildings are powered by a 30 watt solar panel and a 28 ah battery/invertor. There is enough power for LED cabin lights and the radio. Eventually we will upgrade the solar. Many projects, but not enough time.

Thanks to all of the forum members your posts have been very informative and helped us with a number of things.

What a great sounding place. Lots of space between you and any neighbours. Nice when you have some decent buildings to renovate and bring back to life. Love the waterfalls and the varied habitats sound like they will be full of interesting beasties and flora.

Please keep posting your progress and pix of the neat things you see.

cheers

It looks like a dream-come-true piece of property to me with that amazing waterfall! Keep the pictures and updates coming :-) Have you thought about harnessing the energy from the waterfall for power? I just showed hubby your pictures and he says: "The sun can hide in the clouds, the wind doesn't always blow, but in a location like yours, the water always runs. The most consistent and reliable source of power is hydro-electric and you don't need a dam. All you need is a strong current or a height difference such as a waterfall."

We have looked at the feasibility of generating hydro-electric power from the waterfalls but there are constraints with doing so. The waterfalls are located about 1 km from the cabin and waterfalls run only in the winter, spring and fall.

We also looked at a wind mill, but this idea was abandoned due to the local political climate. Our neighbour to the north has three grid-tied windmills on his property but that took over 75K in legal costs.

So for us the only option is solar power as the cost of running hydro to the cabin would be prohibitive.

Nice piece of property you have there

I was looking for 5 to 10 acres, wound up purchasing 27 acres for about what I was ready to spend on 10.

Wow Farfromhome, you could charge admission for seeing that waterfall and people would pay. Would love to see photos of the interior of your cabin when ready. Thanks for posting!
