Hello all, I stumbled upon this forum about 5 weeks ago while researching for my build. Great info and a great resource for us do-it-yourselfers. I am about 3 weekends in and progression seems to be moving at a snails pace, however, this is to be expected with limited time.
Weekend 1 consisted of digging, poring, and setting. Forgot to snap pics so I'll move to weekend 2. The footprint is roughly 12x20 with 3.5 feet of front porch. Even found time to fill my turkey tag!
Will make another post showing progress from last weekend... image.jpg

Another MI resident, welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your progress with us. I love watching builds progress, and hearing stories from people about what works and what didn't.

They're tricky when doing it from a phone (if that's your case).
We're in Oceana, how about you?

Yes, posting from my phone. I have a small 5 acre parcel about 15 minutes north of Cadillac (federal forest on 2 sides).

Olivesheep and cbumpus1- I have a place in Newaygo County. I was wondering what type of building restrictions you ran into? I went the no permit way but was only allowed a 100sqft. Which way did you guys go? Permit/No permit? I know that many Michigan counties differ (i.e. Lake County allows some 200sqft buildings in certain townships).

Quoting: cbumpus1 Weekend 3..... Very nice cbumpus1, especially for only 3 weekends of labor!
Quoting: brooksm29 I was wondering what type of building restrictions you ran into? Our main structure was already established, back in 1983 when the original owner constructed it. So we didn't have to deal with all of the permits and legal stuff. There's a lot of 10x10 and 12x8 cabin on here, and you'll be surprised with the ingenuity. That route would at least get you a nice roof over your head, and something that you could turn into a nice guest cabin down the road if you decide to build something bigger (permit wise) down the road. So keep that in mind when you pick location. Maybe build small on your 2nd choice location, and save the prime spot for later on (larger).

Been a busy summer! Have the shell 90% complete and habitable. I plan on finishing the exterior fascia and trim work this year but the interior will need to wait until spring. Was 35 degrees on Friday night and the stove keep things toasty, even without insulation. front.jpeg

Morley and Hespo guys? Brohman here...looking to go totally off grid also.
Cosby/Fastsled-what type of building restrictions did yo urun into over there? I am in Newaygo County and they are kinda fussy. I am looking for a county that is a little more lenient within a 2 hour drive of Muskegon/GR etc. I got my place now but would like to ungrade from 100sqft to a whopping 200 sqft...lol.

Brooksm29, Wexford Co. has looser restrictions compared to others. Per the Wexford County Building Department "If a building is detached and under 200 square feet and less than 10 feet high, no permit is needed".

We have to stay under 200 square ft to avoid building permits for a "shed". Sounds like about the same as Wexford County.

Quoting: Cosby Hello from up near Hesperia
Sweet, another Hesperia person popped up in this thread. That's where our cabin is too. We're SW of town about 10 minutes, and then another 20 minutes of trails. You been up fishing? I was up weekend before last, and saw lot of salmon, but couldn't get them to bite a damn thing. Hoping there might still be some left this coming weekend.

I also have to stay under 200 square feet, in Mecosta county. Just fine for my "storage" shed.I'm planning on building in the spring.
