Hello All:

I am new to the forum... so here's our story.

In March 2013 CountryRed and I purchased 10 wooded acres in southern MO. and will be working on clearing small part of it to make it our home some day (in like 10 years).

We are soon to have a bulldozer guy come in and clear the spot for the future spot for the cabin. When that is complete we will be able to use it as our camping site till when we are ready to put in the cabin and call it home!

A small comment regarding your cabin layout: If you plan to have someone (kids, guests) sleeping in the main room, it would be nice if bathroom could be accessible from the main room without going through the bedroom.
Just a thought.

I thought the same about the bathroom. I would think about having a door on the kitchen side. You could have a deck. Since its a cabin you will be doing a lot of outdoor dining.

Yeah, that was our plan, too, but the fireplace we found was so big it too up all of the wall space for the bathroom door.

Having it just inside the bedroom has worked out well and has the added advantage of giving you a large private dressing area by simply closing the bedroom door.

Than I would move the bed over. And use that space in the bathroom. You only need a bedroom for sleeping. Guests are going to be very uncomfortable going in your bedroom in the middle of the night. They won't want to!

How do the bulldozer people plan to get rid of what they push down?

Some claim to burn it, but often leave half-burned piles. I am having to deal with that, from dozing that occurred prior to my purchase.

Burying it might be an option. but if you are having a small area cleared there might not be room to bury much without interfering with your cabin plans.

Bigger stuff might be useable for firewood , but the stumps and smaller stuff is about useless. And the bulldozer guy won't want to hang around while you chainsaw firewood unless the meter is running.

I have been clearing by hand and burning, and re-burning, and burning some more. It is a slow process but after clearing several acres I have one 16 foot circle of ashes and nothing else left.

But it is literally taking years.

The dozer man piled it all up in the center of the clearing, burned it, and put the charred stumps in an area where we are going to have a hugelkultur garden bed. Some bigger trees were cut up for firewood.

This is absolutely true. Before we built our addition for guests and had kids and friends stay with us, they had to go through our bedroom to get to the bathroom. They all HATED it. We had them rushing in as soon as we got up to get in there ready to bust a gut and we had one couple peeing outside because they didn't want to wake us up in the night.

If there is any way at all you can get around it, make sure the bathroom is accessible without going through your bedroom.

Hattie- We are still working on plans and I am sure will change them a dozen times before we build.

An update on the property. We have had a load of 1-1/2" rock hauled in to lengthen the drive way. We also found a used 16 x 8 cabin / shed with a cover front porch and now it is on the land. We were wanting a tool and storage shed anyhow and it just worked out.

Shutter: are you in SW MO? Our cabin is technically in Arkansas but the closest town is Golden, MO. I was interested in who did your dozer work and how reasonable their prices were.

Turkeyhunter- It has lots of holes drilled in the bottom as well as rock / gravel inside. It will be used 10-12 days a year, maybe. We are putting gravel around it and building side walls for privacy.

Bzzzt...we are quite a ways east of Golden...roughly 90 miles east of Springfield. Great dozer guy though and I think it was roughly $90 an hour. We will have him back later when we do the lagoon/ septic and fish pond.

A small update to the post. We havent been down to the land in a while but next week sometime we are going there to get the electric line process started. We have to pay a per foot charge but no minimum payments per month after that. It will make it nice in the summer with a window AC unit. We are also putting some clover seed down and ,as always , trimming up the brush. It will be a cold few days. The forecast is highs in the 30's and lows in the teens. We will check and reload the game cameras. Maybe a bear, coyote, fox or cougar this time.
