Hello all,
I found this site while browsing google looking at cabins. My name is alex and together with my wife Hannah we are very much loking forwards to building our own cabin in the next year or two. We have spent the last 10 years living in a housetruck and before that I lived in various vans. Lifestyle choice based on economy (being able to save our earnings towards a land deposit) and freedom to move about. So we are both very much used to small dwellings and the occasional hassle that comes with small spaces.
Our current housetruck (lets think of it as a cabin on wheels) we started building in 2009 when we returned to NZ from the living in the UK. It took us about 1.5 years at a nice relaxed pace to complete. Here's some photos of it..
You can read about the build here if interested...
http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?/topic/26950-yoeddynzs-1985-hino-housetru ck-now-with-a-rembrandt/?hl=housetruck
We have been looking since then at various blocks of land and have finally found something we really like. Its perfect to park the truck on and then over time we can build a cabin up on the ridge where the real nice views are...
So far from reading this forum I have spotted that land prices in Canada and the States are a heap cheaper than here in NZ! It also looks lke many of you have the similar rules and regulations as we do in NZ. Sometimes trying to get people in power to understand why we want to have a simple life with out all the crap can be a struggle but luckily we are buying into an area that is very accepting of the 'hippy' way of life.
I look forwards to posting progress in the future. For we await all the paper work to be cleared and then we begin a large task of clearing back some gorse and blackberries that have overtaken the previously cleared area. There is a lot to learn for both of us. We have never bought land before but sooooo very excited about it all.

Very interesting and very nice. How much land are you looking for and how much does land cost there? The land looks very nice.

That, my friend, is freaking awesome!
My wife, my son and myself spent a year in a 5th wheel traveling the country looking for our land and just completed our place this past year.
Traveling was incredible and we are looking forward to getting out again sometime in the future.
Your rig is spectacular. Thanks for sharing it.

Whereabouts in NZ are you? I lived there for five years, real nice place - traveled top to bottom but I lived and worked in Auckland.

Hey guys- cheers for the warm welcome. We are in the top of the south Island- Nelson. Very sunny. In fact Nelson and my home town of Blenheim, about 110 kms away, we get the most sunshine in NZ. Great place to live.
Land we have found and we put in an offer well below the asking price which was accepted What we are waiting on now is the seller to have his lawyer go over paper work, the council report on the land and a few other bits. Then the work will begin.
First thing will be to clear away the gorse and blackberry that has grown up around where it was previously cleared. Otherwise the remaining land is all covered in lovely native bush with lots of tree ferns. Hard work we are very much loking forward to. But spending money on silly things because the local council or govt says so I am not looking forward to.
Its interesting to read about what issues people on this forum in other places about the world have with local council ruling. Nice to know we are often in the same boat.

My grandfather had a little fishing cabin near Nelson. I was just a kid when I went there. I don't remeber much about it except he had some of that disgusting stick on photo print fake wood on the refrigerator. A momentary lapse in his otherwise stellar character.

Ha ha- you build a whole shack/cabin out of particle board and then cover it in that fake stick on wood for the ultimate in tackiness

Before I go read about the build on oldschool, I just have to say this is amazing!
It looks like a castle, the different levels make it seem much larger.
Now I am off to see the process. I am excited about that!
Thanks for sharing, Alex.
