Hello....been lurking for over a year now...What a great place! I finally have something to show. Ill try to document as much as possible here.
My 3 year plan is to have a pole barn styled 20x30 cabin on our 12 acres in west/central Mass. My goal this year is to have a 20x30 pavilion with a 10 20x10 loft. The cabin with be a 10 month a year get away for a family of 4. A place to relax, get loud, and just enjoy each other and friends.
This is what Ive come up with so far. Im looking for ideas, criticism, and over all comments. I'm going on the record now saying I'm only one man on a budget and have no formal construction experience.
Ive been on the property now for 10 years in worn/cheap crusty campers. I figured Id like something more permanent and am done with fixing dank old campers. My current 34 ft camper still has a few years of service left. Ill use this pavilion as a deck/covered area as long as possible as I enclose it to become a cabin. This buys me time and allows me to finance the project out of pocket.
Ill just drop a bunch of pics and go from there. Enjoy.

Looks nice. I hear you about the dusky trailers.
I considered building a roof structure to keep a trailer dry, but by the time I did that and bought a decent trailer I might as well just build a cabin.
Send more pics as you progress.

To the top..
Not too much to add really. Been slowly picking away at things this summer. Hope to have a full roof done before winter. URL

So my goal was to have a shingled roof before our annual week before Thanksgiving blowout party. I believe Ill get there. My hopes are to have some bracing up and maybe the loft area buttoned up with windows and a railing before snow.
Im starting to collect material now and should be ready to continue come early spring. I did buy myself some time and upgraded campers as well.

Ironlung, it appears that you are using a single 1x10 or 1x12 as a beam on which the rafters rest, attached to the 6x6 poles with two (?) bolts. As they do not appear to be "let in" to a notch at the top of the 6x6's, I would recommend that you add 1x6s, 3 or more feet long, to the exterior surface of the 6x6 poles supporting the bottom of the 1x10 (1x12?) beam. (Notches, if used to support beams in pole construction, are normally cut into the "inside" surface, not outside.) Live loading on your roof from a heavy snow could cause the beams as currently attached to "fail" at the attachment and collapse or be pushed away from the poles. You may also want to add steel strapping that is wrapped around the poles and surrounds your beams. Additionally, I would consider at least adding some form of a rafter tie (cable or steel rod) connecting the two poles 10 feet in from the end opposite the loft. Even better would be to add rafter ties on all four pairs of poles unless you use some other means to counteract the outward forces the roof imparts on your beams and poles.
Consider also the possibility of your single 1x beams to bend outward when under heavy loading. To counteract this tendency and potential for failure of the beams, add a doubled or tripled 1x beam/4x6 on the inside surface at the top of the poles and connect the inside and outside beams with multiple, heavily washered, bolts passing completely through all beam components.
I dislike sounding so negative, but pole barn construction normally uses trusses and beefier beams, either let in on the inside of the poles or resting on top and attached to the poles with steel "T" connectors.

I appreciate the reply. so Im on 8x8 poles and they rest of 2 lagged together 2x20s that are notched into top of the poles. The ridge is a 2'12 Outside notch..I should of went inside. The hardware is all timber lock lag bolts. I agree Im going to need some more rafter tie ins. I thinking cable for now. I have the steel strapping to add to the rafters. My first real concern is some diagonal bracing. Seems to be very top heavy and will sway a bit.
I really could use all the criticism. Realize this is just a budget built camp though.

I really could use all the criticism Good, I'll just make a list of what I'm seeing from this end; All horizontal beams apper to be undersized and inadequately connected. I agree with adakseabee although I'd carry the blocking on the posts under the beam ends down to the footings. The blocking down the loft center girder could be removed, an adequate number of plies installed and then some blocking on the post face under that built up beam.
The way the loft is connected together it isn't really a tie, joist hangers don't have resistance in the withdrawal direction. You need something, cable?, across at that end too.
I'll bet it does sway a bit, I'd agree that is top of the list.

A much needed update. Sorry I don't have any real "in progress" pics uploaded yet.
Goal for the winter was a fully shingled roof...Done. This summers goal is a finished loft with stairs and a 3 sided eating area...almost there.
This fall I plan on finishing off the pavilion area with walls, windows and 2 doors.
Im using 2" foam fiber insulation board between the board and batten walls.
Ive been slowly collecting material through CL deals and some good friends. All my insulation, 3/4" ply on roof, shingles and windows have been donated along with a hell of alot of good help from friends.

Just some progress pics. Goal is to have it weather tight and insulated before the snow flies in the next month. Ill be able to pick away at some interior work during the beginning and end of winter. Cabin isnt accessible via truck mid-winter.

Just an over due update for anyone watching.
I fed 32 people a version of Thanksgiving dinner the week before the holiday inside my pole barn.
Im now weather tight and going to pick at interior walls and insulation. Im using 3" foam board iso insulation I picked up free that was supposed to be used on a commercial flat roof.
Im holding out for some more "free to cheap" windows till spring. I hope to have a wood stove in place before the real snow starts. Also picked up a supplemental ventless propane unit to keep me warm while i work.
Started to frame in a bedroom/mudroom under the loft. Thinking of building bunks to be used by guests when not used for storage.
A parting shot with me and my co-worker taking a break.
till next time.
