Hey all! Today's weather was unreal in southern Ohio. Long sleeve T shirt. I bought a camper in November to use while I'm working on the cabin. Well I opened it up today and a #%$@! mice had gotten in and chewed a hole in the canvas. And then the lock on the camper door broke so spent most of the day fixing the camper! Did get out on a nice hike and found an opossum along the way. He drank out of the stream as I walked by at 4 feet away! Also scored a small deer shed. Great day overall. Come on spring!!!!!

Have you tried moth balls and dryer sheets in your pop up?

I've heard that stuff doesn't work. But I'm trying a product called Cab Fresh that has some very good reviews. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the advice...I think I've got things sealed up pretty good now..hopefully!

Hey all! I think Spring is within reach! Spring peepers and wood frogs were signing. The woodcock are displaying and there are signs of "green" things! Camped out this weekend and got a good start on building a wood shed. The weather was perfect on Saturday and there was even a full moon with zero clouds. Took my night vision goggles and saw a flying squirrel scamper up a tree. Funny,..I also saw plenty of mice and found where they were getting through the foundation so now I know where to patch! Hey all! What great weather we're having. Lots of things are starting to come up and the wildlife are doing their spring things. I got to witness two bats coming out of hibernation for the first time. This one crawled out and just hung there for hours trying to thaw out and wake up. Once they're awake they're getting evicted LOL! Got the woodshed done. I'm getting too old to camp which is motivating me to get this cabin done asap!!! Cheers!

Smawgunner, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through your thread here and look forward to seeing what you get done as the weather warms up. Man, what a great building and property. I think you are doing a fantastic job, keep on with your vision as it is your place to do what you please, don't worry what the nay-sayers think.

Thanks Brian! I've poured my heart and soul into this place since we bought it last year. I wish I had money to hire people to do it right but I'm basically a one man show here...with help from friends now and then. I've got some good tools and I'm learning a lot that's for sure! Thanks for following.

I hear ya on that one, it's not easy or quick doing the one-man-show thing but it is rewarding. I occasionally have some help but I'm basically in the same boat. But hey, we'll just keep at it and have fun along the way.
That's beautiful country down there, I've hunted all around that area. My new place is in north east Ohio but I live in PA just across the border between Pittsburgh and the Ohio line.

Well,...looks like I over did it at the Cabin a couple of weeks ago working on the woodshed. I've got sciatica due to a slipped or bulging disc. The pain down my leg is excruciating. Can't be lifting anything at all until it gets resolved. Cabin progress has ground to a halt. The only good thing is that they tell me to walk for therapy...guess I'll be walking the property a lot! Oh...the other silver lining, the wife allowed me to buy a few more cordless power tools so I don't have to lift that 150lb generator in and out of the truck anymore (which is what probably did me in)

Weather could not have been better this weekend. Put my wife to work since my back problems. We worked pretty good as a team but she did most of the work. Finally got the last bit of wall siding off the beams except for what's behind the staircase. That comes out next. So far so good (before and after pics)

Looks like you've got quite a project ahead, looking forward to watching the progress. I went down to my land last weekend but didn't really do anything except form ideas and explore local roads by bike.

I have to admit I don't...much. Now I went out a few weeks ago and bought a nice expensive mask for when I start to vacuum between the logs. I have a long pool hose I'm going to snake out the window from my shop vac. I do worry about the Hanta Virus, but I don't think there are any cases in Ohio....yet. Thanks for your concern "mom"

Hope everyone was able to get away this weekend! We had a great weekend. Wildflowers are everywhere and my wife found a fairly rare orchid. Fireflys were even out last night! Got a lot accomplished too. Fixed the last remaining "hole" in the siding, tore out the stairs and put a drainage pipe at the back of the cabin. Got rained on pretty hard last night but I was glad to be in the camper and not sleeping in the bed of the truck for once! I'm looking at a Yamaha Rhino this week!!

'Slow going' is good. The best. You can savor it while it happens.
Keep on keepin' on, sir Smawgunner.

Looking good Smaw! Good luck on the Rhino shopping, they're nice. I went with the Polaris Ranger XP, got a deal I couldn't pass up on a leftover 2012 model.

thanks for sharing...that is a nice rig! I haven't ruled out the Ranger. The dump bed sold me on the side by sides. I initially thought of going with a quad but it was really limited in what it can do.

She's ALIVE....and BREATHING for the first time in over 100 years! Got the gable vents in and 3 eve vents on the back side. Weather is getting warm! Hope everyone had a chance to get away this weekend. Ended up buying a Polaris Ranger 400 so we can do some work around the property. Got 2 hours on the clock and break in period is over at 20 hours. I'm not supposed to go crazy with it until then The thing looks HUGE sitting next to the Miata!

Summer is sure here to say. Hot and humid in S.E. Ohio although the morning was so cool and nice on Sunday, I took a nap in the back of the pick up truck listening to the birds! Hadn't been down in a couple of weeks but finally got the front eve vents in.

Could the weather these last few days have been any better?! Woke up this morning well rested to a beautiful sunrise and an endless chorus of birds chirping. It was cool and breezy...so of course I slept in! We went to see fireworks in Athens last night and they were surprisingly good!
So,...got lots of work done. Tore out the rest of the floor and used the old oak tongue and groove to make the door for the composting toilet access. Worked on some of the stone steps in the rear too...should be done the next time I head down. Unfortunately my less than one year old generator stopped working on me. Ran great for hours, turned it off and it would not restart Hopefully it's nothing catastrophic.

Small progress over the last couple of days. Thankfully all work on the outside is done. After a hard day's work, there is nothing like taking a shower in the waterfall....REFRESHING!!! We'll start working on the subfloor next. I have a guy lined up to sand blast the logs too...that'll be nice. Also have the electric company giving me a quote. If it's reasonable we'll have power...if not...propane. Finished up the steps and found this tiny Ball jar under the cabin. No idea what it was used for.

We met with the Ohio Forestry Dept. today to get our land in the Ohio Forest Tax Law program. They'll reduce your property taxes by 50% if you maximize your land for timber! We hiked our property for about 4 hours and developed a management plan. Found 3 box turtles! Learned a lot. We're also getting electricity!!!!! This is HUGE! It's not going to cost as much as I thought. Talked to AEP last week and it seems pretty straight forward. They'll set the pole/transformer and we'll run the wire from there. Making real progress,..we have the entire subfloor in (sorry no pictures) and I'm sure I saw some mice leaving with some packed suitcases! The next step is trying to find someone to sandblast the logs inside. Got an estimate for $4,600.00!!! No thanks. Still looking. Can't wait to be picking some Pawpaw soon!!!!

Hey all! It's been a while since I posted. Got all the subfloor finally in. We're having the inside sandblasted and it's looking really good (left wall is before, right is after)! I still need to spray it with "wood renew" to get the staining out. Hopefully we'll get some nice looking stain and sealer on it before the first frost. The weather has been great! Paw Paw are almost ripe!
