Hello folks. My name is Aaron29 and I hail from Nova Scotia.I am a AVID fisherman/hunter.I recently purchased a huge chunk of land that includes a beautiful trout lake.I am currently building a 16'x16' cabin about 200' away from the lake.Just did the foundation and floor joists yesterday. I have lurked here for quite a long time as I wanted to wait to post until I actually had something to post....
Im sure I will have alot of questions.First one..Trying to save money I bought untreated 2x10 and 2x6 spruce boards.Anyone have any inexpensive/homemade concoctions to weather treat the wood?
Anyways thanks for having me and I look forward to sharing this build with you all.

I'd double up on your rim joist, all the way around and run a large beam under the middle to support the middle of the floor joist with blocking all along the way. Add more blocks/supports around the perimeter too.
Looks good.

hello toyota!!Ya I am running a 4x4 under all of the joists. Also I am supporting the centers with deck blocks on patio slabs on gravel. The only access to the site is by 4 wheeler so getting supplies up there is a bit of a challenge. It took 4, 3km trips just to get what I got there.
The only thing you suggested that I havnt considered is doubleing up on the rim joists.
Thanks for the pointers and the welcome!

If you used galvanized nails you could spray it with a mix of 1 lb copper sulfate and 2 gal. of water . use a weed sprayer .that much should do the whole subfloor ,after it dryes spray on a coat of lite used oil.should last a long time under the cabin. get copper sulfate at home hardwere they sell it for root control in pipes 10.00$ a lb ..the stuff eats iron so it will rust ungalvanized nails quickley. will cosume a paint brushes metal band if left overnight .not likely hurt the stringth of your nails if you only use it once , but they will show rust,

Hi Aaron, welcome to the forums. How much land and around about where?
What all ya hunt and fish for on your land?
You have both water and animals there?
Where I am, we have about 330-ish acres in SW Texas and we have no water to speak of, but tons of Axis, Aoudad, Whitetail, Turkeys, Hogs, Mouflon, Stags, and Sika. Fishing is about 50 miles away though.. heh

You could try to get some good old fashion creosote. It will protect anything. It is pretty deadly stuff but if used carefully, it can be a great preservative. Stinks - but I happen to like the smell. Like an old railway bed. Not sure if you can still get this product.

Nova Scotia is beautiful country Aaron. I'll be watching your build as I plan to build a 16x16 cabin "someday" as well.

I had the same thought, 16' is a large span for 10's.
Great fun can't wait to see the next pics.

For my 16' cube, I'm going to use 9 of those deck blocks with 3 2x12's in them as girders. I will then set chicken wire on top of them for critter protection and then lay down my 2x10 joists across them. Fill with insulation, cover with plywood.

For treating the lumber, look for "Jasco", comes in 1 and 5 gallons. Put it in a pump up cheap weed sprayer and spray away.

Thanks for the reply's folks! Spent the day up at the site, the entire platform is now complete.Unfortunately,my camera was forgotten at home.I will head up to the site tomorrow and update with pictures.
I ended up buying a gallon of "Penntox wood preserver" and painted the sucker green!
Next up will be lumping 140 2x4's up to the site.

We have about 110 acres.A 15 acre lake somewhat splits the land in half.We hunt white tail, grouse, bear, and rabbits occasionally.

Aaron, that rim joist is "bolted" to the 4X4 post. Which is fine to hold it in place, but I think the load should be put on the concrete pad directly instead of through the bolt. That rim joist will carry the entire load of the floor, walls and roof. Cut a chunk of 2X4 or 2X6 and cut it to fit between the rim joist and the concrete pad real tight. That way, the load is not on the bolts. Otherwise, you'd want the rim joist setting on top of the 4X4 instead of on the side. If you put in the pieces, paint them green too.

Another Nova Scotian here....
Starting a 16'x13'=208ft2 (to keep it under the 215sqft permit size) build soon and will be making a thread showing my progress. I'm in Waverley, just outside of Dartmouth and have some tricky land to build on.... but it is waterfront!
Later, Chris

It might be that I just can't see it but make sure you've got your third stud in each corner for nailing whatever wallboard you are using.

Here's where Im a little stumped, and could use some advise.
So I am ready to build the roof trusses.I am doing a 1/3 loft and dont want the cross member type truss. I am going to use 2x6's with 2 2x6's for the main beam. Since I want some headroom in the loft im not sure how to figure how long each 2x6 needs to be.The building is 16x16.
As you can tell by my use of the words "mainbeam and crossmember" that I dont really know about trusses, although I am pretty handy with a hammer.
Some LAMANS terms advise would be great...thanks.
