Howdy,
I've enjoyed looking at all the projects posted here and decided join in on the fun.

Here is our place

It is a work in progress but we sure enjoy it.

So far, critter proof

Lots left to do, especially inside but it is functional. The countertops, sink, wall finish will have to wait until next spring.

Very nice. How big is the cabin? Did you make the cabinets and murphy bed yourself?

Yes, very nice. How big is your place? My wife and I are planning a studio layout cabin at 16x18 with kitchen, bathroom and no loft. Looks good on paper but I always like to find out how much space others use.

Where did you get your murphy bed hardware?

The main floor is 12'x16' with an 12'x8' deck (12 x 24 footprint). There is a 12'x12' loft over the porch.

My wife and I have done all the work, from Design to door knob.

What she lacked in experience she has more than made up for in enthusiasm.

I built the cabinets with wood I bought from a local Sawyer.

It took me a few proto-types, we wanted rustic and unique and this is what we decided on. I tried to incorporate the "defects" - knots, pitch pockets, beetle damage, staining - which is more difficult that it sounds but I like the result. Hard to improve on God's work when it comes to beauty.

The window trim is same stock I purchased for the cabinets. I milled it, let my wife decide on the finish - which I wouldn't have picked but like the result. It took a few mockups before deciding on the style of it too.

It makes nice drawers too.

I bought this murphy bed hardware. http://www.wallbed.com/ I would recommend it.

We back-sheeted the interior with plans to eventually cover with rough sawn planks. Like all the finish that is still a moving target and will have to wait until next year.

As to our location, we're outposted in Washington.

Very nice! Thanks for the pictures. We are going to have to go single story. Wife's bad knee nixes the loft. Walking is fine but stairs/ladders are a problem.

Really like the the look. From the look of the drawer that is some beautiful wood. I'm going to try to get some of our local juniper sawn for our trim and cabinets.

Is there a special use for the top compartment of the left-hand wall cabinet in the kitchen?

Yonderosa, I have a question about that propane stove/oven. Can it work on a standard 40 pound BBW tank? or do you need one of those large ones? Awesome place!

Toyota_mdt_tech; Have you been up to your place recently? I'm hoping to get over this month. Haven't been since DEC!!!

RickandRandy. I run the range off of a 20# tank. Make sure you get the correct regulator (not a BBQ variety) and it works GREAT.

Yo Mo! I just got back from my place. Insulated, wired and sheated it last week. Had a few buds with me, we drove around and drove by your place, all looks good. The last of the big work weeks is over, just small detail stuff, light duty work. I"m tired, beat and sore.

I wished I could do cabinet construction like you did. Nice work by the way. I need to get over to your place and visit sometime.

A few updated pictures;

I've started the interior wall finish. I'm using random width/thickness Doug Fir that I've left unsurfaced hoping for a more rustic effect.

We used a premium grade vinyl window. I made the interior trim/liners from wood I milled.

Yonderosa, you are quite a craftsman for sure. Nice woodwork, ie enclosed soffits, interior finish, cabinets, dovetails...

Wont make the meeting. I burnt myself out again, need a few months away. Then I'll be chomping at the bit to get back over there. Seems I plan for all work and lots of it when I do go over there. But I'm winding down. Still have lots of work, but its smaller lighter duty stuff. The last of the big heavy work is over. What did you do for floor covering. I might just use a throw rug. Still debating. I'll be glad when I go over there to just relax and do little, use the cabin for its intended design, R&R.

Another trip = a little more done

Trying to give it a rustic feel by using rough sawn Douglas Fir for the wall coverings installed randomly. I milled the trim from the same stock but finished it dark for contrast (The wife's spec)

I also managed to get a little time on the outside. Still stuff left to do but it was nice to get a gable end covered up.

Yo Mo, I was thinking rough sawn wood also. I was even thinking cedar like fence boards to keep cost down a little. I too like that rustic look. Maybe let it age naturally (darken). What are you using for heat? I see you went regular shingles for the roof. I used metal, kinda wished I'd done the shingles too. I have to worry about the snow sliding off and shearing off the stove pipe. I have several options to protect it, not sure which one yet. I need to get my painted now that I have finished the outside. Probably do it this summer or early fall at the latest. Then I will trim out all the electrical too. I need to start on my kitchenette. Just a few cabinets. I picked up a nice oven/range and small double basin sink from a camp trailer. I wished I was handy with cabinets like you are. I may have to end up just paying someone to build them for me.

Rick,
It took us a while to settle on the rough sawn. The style evolved as we went - the boss refined it and I think it turned out looking pretty good. Of course, it's a lot more work... resawing, milling and finishing... Keeping the boss happy makes for a more "harmonious outcome."

Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy too. It is all part of the fun. I sure enjoy looking at what we've accomplished, there is a much higher degree of satisfaction turning an idea (dream) into reality with your own two hands. I bet you get that same feeling looking at your place.

Comp roofing has a lot going for it these days. Comparatively inexpensive, looks good, durable and easy to repair if needed. I also believe it is easier to critter-proof. My Sister's place has metal roofs and bats and mice seem to find their way through the littlest gaps. So far we've not had any critter problems except for the free range cows finding the corner of our building a good place to scratch...

Those Big Buddy heaters work great. Used about $3 of propane (bulk tank) on a four day stay with the low temperatures dipping down below zero. We stayed nice and toasty. The cabin looses about 2 or 3 degrees per hour in that cold so I only had to turn on the heater every 3 or 4 hours to get it back to room temperature.

If you decided to go custom cabinets I think I could be competitive in price and superior in quality, plus I can make sizes/styles/materials that you won't find in stock cabinets.

Mo, I would love to contract out my cabinets to you. But didnt want to ask. :D I have a small kitchenette and would like some overhead cabinets also. Wont be a lot of work, (that may be good) but worth your time for sure. I just dont see where you will find the extra time with all the stuff you have been doing on your place. But would love to have you build my cabinets. We will have to meet up out there, then you can come take a look and see what is entailed and then shoot me a price. I have your email address, do you have mine?

Rick
