And then there is this weeks project. Extending the 4ft porch to a 10ft deck. NotoriousAPP - would love to see some of your interior pictures. How did you like the cost of all the electrical wiring? Everything always cost more than we think it will. And we try to do it on a budget.

Man, your husband is good with the carpentry skills.
Total electrical rough in cost was $3k including labor + materials. I started doing it myself but it was taking me forever and I'm getting tired of having a cabin I can't use so I bit the bullet and paid an electrician to finish it. Like most things I do it was probably overkill but I figured I'd do it right the first time.
I attached my electrical layout. I think there was 11 circuits.

My hubby thanks you for the compliment. He also told me that if you ever want to pick his brain on anything on the cabin you are welcome to call him. I will email you his number if you like. I look forward to pictures of your build.

While hubby was working on the deck I did a few projects of my own. One was finally paint the metal we used on the banister, next was glaze bedroom door & stain bathroom door. And because the finished deck looked like it need something on it (lol) I painted the old wicker chairs we had and grabbed one of our small plastic folding tables to make a small patio set for now. Ah life is so good...... Painted re-bar

i like the interior door, is that a wood door or a masonite skinned door? My wife has worked with glazes before so she would have a better idea than i do of this. What steps did you do? Wonder if it will work on a metal door?

Not real wood. Cheap door from Lowes in stock. First I sprayed it with Krylon wood stain color cedar, then I dragged a cloth to make it look like wood grain. After that I put on Zinnsser Blend & Glaze builder brown. Heavier in the cracks and just wiped off. Now all I need to do is seal with a satin varnish. I will be trying in on a metal door next. I think it should work fine as long as I let it dry real good between steps. I will let you know how the metal works but it won't be until 3weeks. Let me know if you try it before then.

Oh I forgot I also laid a quick stepping stone path to the pool. And this is how the new deck looks so far. That is it for us! Until about 3 weeks from now.

Just wanted to second the kudos on the door you faux finished, Purplerules. I saw the 'before' in the earlier pictures. Very, very well done, looks like the real thing!
Your whole cabin is very well done in fact. Those chairs & vanity were outstanding finds.
I can surely see why you guys can't wait to go back the minute you leave, you've created such a lovely retreat for yourselves there.

Spending Labor Day Weekend at my favorite place on the planet. Hubby is working on installing the indoor shower. This is one of the last major things for the inside. Hard to believe it's a year and half since we started. We've sure come a long way.

Erinsmom - thanks
WELL WE DID IT!!!!!!!! Just bought the 2.8 acres next to ours, it opened up and was a fair price so we jumped on. Makes us very close to 6 acres now. It also has 3 bedrooms, 2 bath cottage on it. Plus a small storage shed. And a train caboose waiting to just be renovated. The best part is the view of the lake is a lot better than from our property. This will be our retirement home, making the cabin our guest house. When we return in a few weeks I will take some pictures to post.

We are so excited about our new adventure, but aprehensive of the role the cabin will play. The past two years have been so much fun working on it. There are still many finishing task to be completed and I fear it will take a back seat to the cottage. But the cottage was hard to pass up since it joins our land and comes fully furnished. It is 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, a nice size country kitchen. And very cute as you will see in coming pictures.

And the caboose that came with the land. This will be our retirement project to restore into a guest space. So far in the research to identify is to have narrowed it down to one of the early 1920-1930's wooden cabooses as you can see original wood on the ends of the platforms. May be from one of these lines:MKT, Union Pacific, Cotton-belt, or Southern Pacific. If there are any train buff's here and can ID please let me know. image.jpg

Great story. Sounds like you could rent out for a little extra. I like the metal ceiling in your first cabin. Maybe the lights set it off.

Wow, congratulations Purp! Such a very pretty cottage and the land is quite picturesque. That caboose project sounds just wonderful, too.
I do feel kinda bittersweet about the little cabin, though, I bet you do too. You guys built that (mostly) yourselves, lotsa love went into it and now it's going to be playing only a supporting role on your grand estate. Sad to see it go empty.
OwenC had a great idea, though. Maybe you could open up a bed & breakfast!

Tichalet- thanks for the kind words. We are tossing around weekend rentals. Calling it the 3C's (cabin, caboose, & cottage) each one would offer it's own unique experience. From rustic to vintage and who would'nt like to stay in a real train caboose.

I have been silent awhile, as we get use to the cottage. Hubby did do a project on the cabin property. Built a bridge over the gully creek. Temporary one

Found some cheap (3) 3x8x16 treat beams and just laid them over the creek. Cut to 5 ft width some leftover 2x6, 2x8 and 2x10s and screwed the on the beams. The rails are(will be) small oak cut from the property and nailed to the side. This will be just high enough to keep the golf cart wheels from going over the edge. Each corner will have a much larger tree post concreted in the ground and the bolted to the bridge to help support when the water gets high.
