Hello all. First post on this site,
so Hello...
Thanks for the reading material and ideas that you all have shared.

Ok down to business. I'm in the process of purchasing an older farmhouse/cottage. Its pretty in ragged condition and needs some love. The deal isn't complete so I'm not saying its mine but would like to grab some knowledge of those that know.

This thread has a couple of topics I want to cover, hopefully.
1- Self dug water wells
2- Outhouse/bathroom
3- Grid disconnect/Solar
4- Awning/porches
5- Small addition to structure
6- Security of property
7- Moments to cherish

So anyway just wanted to say hi.

Welcome to the forum ned. There are lots of handy people on this site so I'm sure they'll have good advice to give. I absolutely love old buildings. Do you have any photos of the one you are interested in?

Welcome Ned,
I haven't built a cabin yet, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I will address each item I can, but start by going to Lowes or Home depot or better yet the library and get a book about sheds and barns, or some other small structure building. That should get you started in the right direction. Of course read the posts hear and use the search function to find more specific posts.
1. Self dug wells find a water witch or dowser to see if they can find water. Talk to your neighbors and see if anybody has dug a well and how deep they had to go. Is your ground rocky, or hard clay? If it is then a driven sand point probably won't work. U-tube has some interesting well digging videos, some are like a larger auger.
2. It depends on your local laws and ground conditions again. Sure you can dig a hole and through a structure over it. The environment may suffer and you do want a well so you have to consider cross contamination. The safest solution is burying a tank and have it pumped as required. Legal requirements rule the day here. Don't forget sawdust toilets, or composting toilets. Look for the "humanure book" to down load online. Look in your county extension office they may have some self help literature on the subject.
3. Search the forum, there are some really good tech questions already answered for you, as well as set up and problem solving threads as well.
4. Awning and porches are a very good way to stretch your living space and a great place to relax. See number one, search the web for advice, and go to the library. The biggest problem is to install it and not have it leak around the wall junction. How it is joined, when it is joined all play a part in that.
5. Small additions have the same leaking problem as porches. I can't help you too much here see number 1 and 4, sorry.
6. Security-- There has been a lot of threads on this subject. Best ways I have gleaned; don't sore valuables there, get to know your neighbors, make it hard to get to, use security locks and bars or leave it open so they don't tear it up breaking in, post trail cameras to see who has been there, or use the search function, and read what others have done and draw your own conclusions.
7. Moments to cherish are as easy to come by as spending time with your loved ones. That happens wherever you are, but without the distractions of modern life time spent with loved ones is appreciated more because there are no distractions to dilute, or interrupt the experience.
There are a great bunch of knowledgeable and friendly people here. Ask specific questions as you need help and read the forum. Almost anything you can think of has been asked before. Good luck and hope I haven't muddied the waters too much.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. As exsailor stated, there is lots of info on the site and web. I didn't want to sound to much of a newbie by posting the list but oh well. I should have a better idea come next weekend Yippie.
