I just realized that Google Earth/Maps updated their image in my neck of the woods with this high res sat image. Anyone else have one?

Wow, I wish their photos were that good in my area! It would help for site planning.

I've seen the one of my place, but I don't have enough speed out here to load it. I was amazed at how detailed it is. No sense in trying to hide anymore.

This is a shot of our White Birch Acres. It does not show the 2011 additions of an out house/shower, pump shed, and gravel pathways. I'll have to wait for the next updates to show those.

I understand some county tax assessors use a computer program that compares new pics to old looking for changes. If your cabin shows up, they will contact you eventually.

Our woods are so thick it is pretty hard to see much with the cabin itself but in the clearing the picture is so clear you can see every tire track in the ground! Last weekend we went up and found another notice from the tax assessor in the door...he's been coming around every six months-annoying! Just can't wait to get his letter with his new findings...we have very high property taxes in Wisconsin and don't want to be taxed right out of our cabin so we are kinda holding our breath :-|

It was in an article I read several years ago. We don't have permiting here, but they still find out about new structures built out of sight from any public roads. I have an idea they are using the program to look for them.

Our county has not only a brand new set of aerials but they actually have a website for public viewing. From it you can determine *everything* about the property. They overlay the property lines, list the tax account number, ownership of record, assessed value of the parcel...you name it...its there. In fact, now that I mention this I will dig out that photo and compare it to my Google earth photo from above. I am not worried about the revenuers coming around. Everything is documented and permitted through our club membership. In fact I found the 1998 building permit from our camp tacked to a tree in the woods shortly after we bought it. I kept it for sentimental reasons.

Someone I know in NY state told me that the state has a revolving schedule where every piece of land is aerial surveyed over a five year period. Then repeat.

The county we are in the assessor is required to physically go out to all vacant land once per year and make sure no improvements have been made. It would be very difficult to hide a small cabin.

I don't know about the 5 year schedule, Don, but I do know that every parcel of land in NYS is aerial mapped and coded for tax purposes. I know this because (dare I admit this here?) I used to work for an aerial tax mapping company that was contracted to NYS to produce a working set of tax maps. This goes back to 1973, the year I graduated college, and my first honest to goodness real job. Contracts were let by county (all 62 of them) and I worked on one of the first county contracts let.

Yes, automated change detection software can identify new buildings, additions and driveways. Don't assume you are safe just because your cabin is "hidden" in the trees. It costs very little extra to capture an infrared image at the same time. If you've got the heat on, you will show up!
Google "automated change detection" and "building change detection" to learn more.

Absolutely is true. They use an overlay to see "new construction" then check records.

My county my cabin is in, has that. It shows everything, name, address, photos of cabin, property lines.

Last year I called my son and said to him "nice grill you just bought". He had just bought a Weber style kettle grill, and I actually saw it sitting in his back yard on a new Google earth photo that was just taken. I could tell what it was from the triangular shadow of the legs on the lawn.

Bing updated the map of my place in the two week window after I stained the plywood floor of the shed and before I started on the walls. (Aug. 2012)
The lower place is a year older but is finally on the maps. A lot of change in the last two years.
