I am no longer outside in 18 degree weather in my summer kitchen in the middle of the winter.whee.i love my new kitchen me and the mister have been working on. the inside does not have a sink...i am planning on using an ole fashioned dish pan.The kind with handles and i can toss out the dish water when done and hang it up. we still have alot to do but we are coming along with our cabin. This last weekend we went to our woods for several days.We love it out there and work along together famously. I finally painted the cabin floor and now it is smooth and sweeps so nice and mops so easily. He built a storage loft of which i am so grateful. The mister also installed a door.It is so pretty and i am so thrilled.Come spring we are putting shakes all over the outside after we tar paper the outside walls of the kitchen. we made the add on and then went back.some little critters got into my kitchen. How could i tell??there was chipmunk chips in my fry pan.i put water in the pan and got side tracked and came back and there was chipmunk gravy.the mister called it hvg.hana virus gravy.hee hee.anyway..He plugged up all the little places the critters were getting in at.hopefully i can post some photos.i will try.we came back from our land feeling inspired and thrilled at all the work we got done.hugs cabi3 kitchen and main room

Hi dear hattie.it sure is.thank u.we are happy with the things we got done recently. i need to ask everyone this question.i found an old replica of a wards catalog and it is a copy of back in the 1800's.well,i have this idea to tear out those pages and use the pages as wallpaper.Pages of ole woodstoves and ole washing machines and kitchen wares and pie tins and all the things they had for sale back then. does anyone have experience with making their own wallpaper paste?its something like flour, water, alum and oil of clove .the oil of clove is a natural preservative i found out.then i want to shellac them. thank u for any thoughts on this homemade wallpaper paste.

Hi cabingal3....What about using a decoupage glue? It is a glue, sealer and finish all in one. I know it isn't homemade, but it should work quite well I would think.

Yes Hattie, I agree...it is a great idea!!! Should be very durable- it will make a hard finish over it. Also not too pricey and easy to find.
cabingal3-Your walls are going to look very cool. I love that creative idea! Have fun with that project!

thank u everyone for your answers.well i sure do love like modge podge.is this what u mean? i will keep this in mind as i go look to see the cost of clove oil...and compare it to the cost of the homemade stuff.cost is important right now cause of the misters lay offs on thanksgiving week and xmas week.soo.this is why i was leaning toward homemade wallpaper paste but also i was thinking-i dont want bugs to get into the homemade paste under the paper and bw eating it.Soo both of u and your ideas may win out in the end.Theres no real finish line.so i could take my time and buy a bottle of the decoupage glue a bottle at a time.as i am thinking on this idea of yours...i am liking it more and more.thank u and i will have pictures.i think it will look so cute.

Yes, modge podge and decoupage are the same thing. I think it will look fabulous cabingal3. What a creative idea.
When the kids and I drove cross-country to move out here from Ontario, I decoupaged an old table I had. I wanted something to remember our trip across Canada, so I decoupaged a map (that I highlighted our route on) onto the table together with photos we took along the way and cards our family and friends had given us at our good bye party held the night before we left. It turned out quite well and gave us a keepsake of our life changing journey. *S*
As you and GaryO continue to work on your cabin, don't forget to do a small time capsule and hide it in a wall somewhere. Put some photos of both of you, maybe some coins of the year you are doing the build and a little story. We did that here and hopefully, some day, someone will find it and think it is pretty neat.

hello everyone.me and the mister went to the woods and our cabin for xmas.it was my long time dream to spend a xmas there.the week before we left we kept seeing the temps in the below zeros and we were a bit scared about freezing our behinds off.once we got going the weather went into a warming phase.the lowest was 12 and the highest 38.so it was not too bad.I have never been there not even once when it snowed.i was so wishing for snow. we did drive right into the property and not have to hike in. I was worried about our kitchen as it is not yet insulated.it was cold.we had to put things in our ice box to keep them from not freezing in the kitchen. we had a wonderful time.gar burned alot of piles of wood we had out in front of the cabin.it is so nice to see the cleared off land now. then we slept and read and read and slept and went for a walk or two and i got to hunt a tiny bit. i am so looking forward to spring and getting shakes on the outer kitchen walls. gar told me his ideas for the cabin and the new addition.i loved hearing his thoughts and we both talked and shared and dreamed some more.He wants to add a room on front for our wood stove and two chairs to put by the wood stove and books and more books all around in the room.so this sounds wonderful.i am very excited.so here s our kitchen now days.it takes a while cause we sure dont get out there as much as we wish to. i hope everyone had a very merry christmas.

It looks and sounds wonderful! Do you think you will get up again after you get some snow? We don't have snow at our place either as far as I know. We will be going up this weekend so we will see. I hope you get to see your place with snow cause it almost feels like a whole different place...the romance of it all I guess :)

Quoting: cabingal3 i was so wishing for snow. Be careful what you wish for! I used to say the same thing, but now five years after building the cabin, I shiver at the thought of pushing through 2-3 feet of snow that doesn't melt until spring.

Thank u 45north,it is a small and easy kitchen to build.the mister and i go along.he thinks up the plans and has a good idea on what can be done and what can not be done.i think a bit outside of the box and come up with goofy ideas that he seems sometimes to take hold of and mix with his knowledge.so we are a good team. ErinsMom.the litte grandsons are city boys. They would never probably want to go.those buddies would have frozen there behinds off.hee hee.we needed time away together.we have the grandsons monday, wed.,thursdays, and fridays and some weekends and tonite my daughter was called into work.so we have them tonite.a tuesday nite.so it was time for us.thanks ErinsMom-i have missed u too and being here.

You sound like me taking care of my grandchildren plus one other little guy who is unrelated. It is wonderful having them for the day but a lot of work...like everyone who is a grandparent can relate to~it's nice to spend time together but also nice at the end of the day when they go back home to their parents :-) so true!
